Water filters

Yep! I think it was @steve that first posted this video, in another thread here somewhere. I've been following suit ever since.

Brilliant! Thanks

How does the bottle hold up after repeatedly squeezing and crushing the plastic bottle for a 7 to 8 day hike?
I guess I am paranoid about cracking the plastic bottle.
Ok... more test needed

I wonder if you put the flip cap from the 750ml smartwater bottle on a Sawyer pouch, if you could get the same back flush effect without worrying about repeatedly crushing the bottle? Might be worth a test. I always keep a Sawyer pouch in my water kit as my "dirty" container for filtering anyways.

I've used gravity filters for years but got frustrated after they clogged. I think I own at least 4 filters gravity, hand pumps, and straws at the moment. They are a great option and I usually have someone bring a hand pump when on the trail. However, I can process a liter in 90 seconds and not open my pack with a steripen. I will take the extra 2-3 oz for $60 savings and an extra 15 min. on the trail. I just finished a 4 day trip through the Teton Crest Trail and really enjoyed it. There are many options and I like having multiple tools to choose from.

I think I would love the weight of the steripen but around here there is to much stuff in the water 90 % of the time. For me a filter is the best option. I have purchased 3 mini's 1 squeeze in the past couple years and had an issue with one of the mini's not flowing well. Went in the garbage. The other 2 mini's and squeeze work great. If there is a lot of stuff in the water I back flush right after using. You can squeeze those platy's also to cut the time to around 4 minutes for 2 liters. And usually I can plan my breaks around water, so to take a few minutes to fill the bladder up then sit back relax have a snack. Also what's nice about the bladders is you can haul a bunch of water back to camp in the evening and have plenty for dinner, breakfast and to start your day. The bladders are multi use too. Hang in tree and use as shower. I keep this system all rolled up together and goes in my side pouch next to my water bottle. Ditch the syringe now we're talking 7.4oz for the system.

I like the idea of ditching the syringe. Gona do more testing.
On my up coming trip I will also have a 32oz Sawyer pouch on hand but it will be filled with liquid courage for medicinal purposes. But still could be used for back up if needed.

Lol 32 oz of spirits (approx 8 lbs) is a go, but how do we ditch that 1.2 oz syringe! I like your style Opi :)

I am resurrecting this thread.

I have a katadyn pump water filter and unless you have a naglene bottle to pump into it is a PIA to use by yourself. I did my best this last trip to go as light as I could. So I didn't take a naglene.

My companions had gravity filters and after the first night where I disappeared for 45 minutes to pump my water they wouldn't let me use my pump anymore. I am not going to lie it was nice!

So I have decided I want a gravity filter. They both had the MSR and had to back flow the filter frequently to get a good flow. I see that Katadyn has a 3L BeFree filter.

Anyone use this? What is your preference for gravity filters?

PS. I don't trust Steri-pens. I never will. Except maybe that first time it is used and only of the water is crystal clear.

Katadyn Befree 3L is the bomb. Never using a squeeze filter again.

That Befree 3L is intriguing.

I have both the Sawyer Squeeze and the Steripen and I'm always torn between which to take. Each has pros and cons. I'm kinda with you, @blueeyes , it's hard to trust the Steripen 100% since it doesn't actually filter. You never know what's going on "upstream". But, I very much dislike having to squeeze the sawyer into my small mouth bottles.

I'll have to look into gravity filters a little more. It seems like the people that have them really like them.

Good to know... there where a couple of bad reviews on Amazon. Mostly that it wasn't very durable. I have the small single use BeFree but haven't used it. I love the concept of the BeFree.

My issue with the steri-pen is battery life. As battery life declines so does the ability of that pen to work. And cloudy water makes me nervous even with a regular filter system let a lone the steri-pen.

Pumping is time consuming.

I loved the gravity filter even with how often they had to back flow the filter.

I was on a recent trip with Wanderlust 073 and his Katydin Befree 3L. I have the Kandinsky pump. It is now put away for safe keeping since I got my BeFree 3L the day after I got home. I will now do other things besides pump water...

I use a Sawyer Mini Filter for five years now. Super lightweight and for $20 you can’t beat it. It never let me down so far. I even bring it on day hikes when there is water nearby so I do not have to carry all the water like in Zion.
I don’t mind the squeezing, so I will probably stick to my little filter for quite a while

What I don't understand with this BeFree filter is why didn't they make the "bottom" of the bag a roll top open/close? Easier to fill then trying to fill it through the "top".

I use LifeStraw personal water filter and I would recommend this device to anyone. The filtration system is reliable and safe to use, the water is clear and very tasty. I have not had any health problems while using it.
