I am glad I didn't do the hike because I think I would have headed up the wrong wash.
The wash to the right looks really well travelled and I would have gone that way. So now that I know I can see it is not that way. It was pretty confusing when I got there on the ground as there are several different washes including the large one which comes in from the far left, also not the right one.
 
Well, don't wait too late. Are you familiar with a little app called "The Photographer's Ephemeris"? It will give you much information about sun and moon rise and set, angle, etc. anywhere and at any date. And it's free! On your computer or your tablet.

When I talked to the guy in the Big Water BLM office he said that the back road has officially been closed since technically since 1996, but that there has only been a sign on it more recently. He also told me that regardless of signage or lack thereof, it is illegal to drive on any road which is not shown on the GSENM map. There are a whole lot more pretty well used and defined roads than there are on this map.
