I am planning to do Steve Allen's escalante south loop next week (Up Stevens Canyon, Baker trail, to cliff, back to the escalate) and I am curious to know how likely it is I will find full potholes and flowing springs in the southern escalate area. If anyone has any insight or experience, I would really appreciate it! Thank you for your help!

I can only speak to lower Halls Creek (below the narrows) but it was flowing as were many of its side canyons about 2 weeks ago. It seems to me like it's been wet enough lately that you'll be OK but who knows.

Check out recent Hayduke Trail hiker blogs. They should be headed thru within the next week-month and many if them take the Baker Trail route.

Definitely do further research for specific areas like high up on Cliff, but I've been in this area after 4 months of no rain and there was still pothole water in the places Allen mentioned.

too bad I deleted my fb a few years ago when it became intolerable and evil :)
I haven't deleted my facebook yet, but I don't really participate at all anymore. I post links to my blog that nobody reads and that's about it :D

If you do the route, please let me know. Kicking the tires on this route for end of April.

Thank you all for your help. I did the route with a partner starting last Sunday. We ended up taking an extra day to make the last few days more relaxed, resulting in a 7.5 day trip. We were very fortunate as there was just enough rain on March 26 to fill most small potholes in the area with water, but leave the roads untouched. I assume this water will last for another week or two, but it is starting to get hot, so this may not be the case everywhere. Unfortunately, since we did not use the large potholes near "Cliff", I am not able to report on how they are doing, but otherwise, we found at least some water in every large and medium pothole Allen mentions in the text. I wish I knew how long it will last. As Allen mentions, there is no water on the hike up to cliff or the escalante rim heading to Fool's canyon (no potholes). As for the road, my 2010 Honda Civic had absolutely no issues getting to the water tank on Fortymile. I would not recommend it, but would not be too surprised if it would have made it to the end of the road. I am thinking of making a trip report with some beta we would have found useful, will try to post soon. Happy trails!

@Nethos LMK if you decide to go. @Capsnack and I are debating about doing the same loop beginning of May, but may skip depending on water and temps.

Still up in the air for me. IF I go, it will be to do the Fold/Stevens loop as opposed to the "Escalante South" route. I'm not sure my canyon-fu is ready for the crux ramp of E. South. I'm sure I could do it, but would probably enjoy it more if done at the end of one of my longer Utah trips, rather than a drop-in and out. If my availability pushes later into May I would probably go for something that has more water for heat relief. May be looking for partners, PM me if you are interested in that and we can see if it's a good fit.
