Our church had a father's and son's campout over the weekend. It was located up Settlement Canyon, which is located just outside of Tooele. I actually found the canyon itself really beautiful and despite all the large trailers, I found a few great campsites that would be great for a one-night getaway. There is a nice little creek that runs through the canyon. The canyon is gated off (likely by Rio Tinto mining) after 5 miles or so (large group camping area there before the gate).

I had brought along the ropes and harness' to see if Caiden wanted to try some rappelling. The problem was that cliff faces were slim-pickings. The mountains around us were really steep, but no vertical faces. We did find this small 12' rock jutting out amongst the trees, so I had him practice on that one.

Here is a short video I made of my son rappelling

Settlement can be a nice place for a quick getaway. The gate is to the private property owned by a number of different people, thankfully not KUC so I can get the key every so often and hang out. Heck I was even married up that canyon.

Middle Canyon and Ophir have more vertical faces to rap or climb as well as some nice campsites as well.

That's great to know. You never know going up there. Kind of sad that there is so much un-used and they can control that area. I would spend more time up Butterfield if there was any place to camp that wasn't blocked by a big ugly cement barrier spray painted "stay out".

There are a bunch of campsites on the Middle Canyon side of Butterfield, even a decent downhill bike trail at the top going into Middle canyon. No camping on the Butterfield side though :(
