Hoping I'm posting in the right place....a friend and I are planning to hike in Salt Creek right around August 17-23...we are flexible...wondering if anyone else might be in the area at that time that we could hitch a cheaper ride to the trailhead at Cathedral Butte with than using the shuttle services?

This is a good place. I don't know anyone down there that time. Be careful though - it'll probably be pretty stinking hot out there! Hopefully you'll get some awesome summer thunderstorms though. Have an awesome trip!

Hey my two boys and I are hiking Salt Creek Aug 10-17.
We are parking at the top and hiking down. I am trying to get my brother to get my Jeep from Cathedral Butte and meet us at peakaboo with my jeep.
I will find out when he is going up to the top.

Thanks guys! It would be so much easier, time-wise if we could hike all the way through. I really wanted to be out in the trail for 10 days, but my daughter had a recent health scare and I need to be more accessible. My only other option is to do an out and back from each end to see everything and DAMN I don't want to climb back up onto Cathedral Butte...LOL

Unfortunately Jack I think we'll miss you...we can't leave MI until the 17th, which won't put us there until sometime the 19th and on the trail the 20th. I would be willing to pay someone in the area if it didn't cost me $225.

I am so excited to finally get there Nick, after 8 months of planning!! Your blog was what inspired me, and my friend....it will be amazing I'm sure!

Looking on the parks web site horse canyon is closed because of quick sand. Don't know if my brother will want to drive in if he can only get to peakaboo. So I think we are hiking back out the top.
I hope you have a fantastic time. Stay safe and wear sunscreen.

isn't it only for vehicle traffic?
You normally park your vehicle at the gate to Pekaboo/Horse and you actually never get into Horse Canyon.
But you can also start at Squaw Flat campground, it's roughly two miles longer but you avoid the deep soft sand.
I've done both exit routes and would never again hike out again from Peekaboo to Cave Springs due to the sand.

Currently my reservations are to hike back out the top where my jeep will be. We were going to go out the bottom if my brother could do the shuttle for us.
Didn't consider hiking out to squaw. Now that you talk about it, that would be cool. I like seeing new country and not back tracking.
We will see how it shakes out in the next couple days.
