Salt Creek May 2013

Amazing report. Thank you for sharing.

"Looking for a campsite in an unfamiliar area after dark was not a prospect that excited me,"

You had never been to Big Pocket Overlook and you found it in the dark? Nice. One of my favorite hangouts in the summer.

EDIT: I went back and read it again. You got there at twilight.

Great report. Strangely i was just reading about this hike in Kelsey's book on a subway train in London coming home tonight, and then you bring it all home in great pics!

You've got some great pics. I'm helping to plan a trip for 4 this June to Canyonlands, 1st time visit for all of us so we're all excited! We've decided to hike Salt Creek Canyon south to north since it looked like we could obtain water the whole way for a summer trip, so campsites are booked. Then we hope to go from Peekaboo to Chesler Park by way of Lost Canyon, as long as we can get water by Druid's Arch.
Right now we're doing research to find out where all the points of interest are along the way in Salt Creek. Was this the Kelsey guidebook you used: Hiking, Biking and Exploring Canyonlands National Park and Vicinity, 2nd Edition ? I was thinking of ordering it but it sounds like placement of sites may be off on the guide you carried so that's why I'm wondering. We'd already purchased the National Geographic Canyonlands topo be fore reading this, it's probably the same one you had since the Wedding Ring Arch is marked southeast of Kirk's Cabin. If there is a better guide or maps we should purchase? I'd appreciate any pointers. After we leave Canyonlands we're headed to Capital Reef so we still need to plan our hiking there but wanted to finish this portion of the trip 1st.
Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words. I don't know of a better map. you might find some more detailed ones online somewhere, but know that the most recent NatGeo map has Wedding Ring Arch Misplaced. The Kelsey book I was referring to was the non-technical guide to the colorado plateau. Some pointers: Don't miss the all-american man! it is fantastic and easy to blaze past if you are pounding out miles in a hurry. The cliff that hides the pictograph looks like a big shoe from the side with a crack running along the heel. The crack in the heel holds the goods. Keep your camp clean. We had issues with racoons and bears are seen regularly out there. PM me if you want to talk about Capitol Reef. I love that place and could help you pick some good hikes.

Before you've to leave Elephant Cyn on the left to the path leading forwards to Druid, follow Elephant Cyn and you can find a spring and several potholes. Don't forget to purify it.

Thanks so much for your response!
From what I've read online, I know the American Man (AM) is in an area where the canyon narrows, the walls are higher, and in a cave, but I didn't know about the shape of the cliff so thanks. Is this cliff on the right (easts) side?
I've also read that the Four Faces are after the American Man, is this on the same side of the canyon as AM?
As far as pics go you see a lot of the same ones while researching, not that I mind :), but I really liked your play with light in the narrow caves.
I'll consider contacting you a little later about Capital Reef. Something has come up that may effect how much hiking I can do so I'm totally bummed right now :(

The spring is listed on the maps and mentioned in several blogs, but a few of them made it sound like it could seasonally stop following. I read this about Peekaboo also, someone mentions that the water looked like green jello, so we are concerned about having enough water to stay there a night on top of the 10+ mi to Chesler. Are backup plan was to hike out Peekaboo to Squaw TH where are car will be. Yes, we always carry our filter and use it no matter what! Even when we were at Havasu we used it though we saw people filling their bottles directly from the source, not worth the risk. Thanks
