This isn't exactly new news, but it's new to me, so thought I'd post and see what people think. It looks like Google announced plans to kill off Panaramio back in September and replace it with Google Views. From what I've read, the Panaramio community is not happy and the founders of the site have gone so far as to start a petition to keep the site alive.

It seems like Views will do basically the same thing, but perhaps dilute relevant photos with more junk? Existing Panaramio photos can be migrated over, but not comments. Any opinions on this? Ironically, after using it as a resource for years and thinking I should for quite some time, I just started posting to Panaramio last night.

I've learned not to get too attached to Google products since they usually will kill (or drastically change) the ones you love. RIP Google reader.

As far as Panaramio... I like it and have found some cool rock art panels with it. Not sure how Views stacks up but based on past experience, I will like it roughly half as much.

Wow -- I hadn't heard that.

I used to love Panoramio pics (minus the name that I can never spell right w/o looking -- hint, hint! :) ) BUT... for the last couple years it's become so inundated with misplaced and mis-captioned photos that I find it frustrating to use. The admin tools and scheduling with Google Earth also left a lot to be desired.

But, I still will hate to see it go though.

I quit looking at Pano pics..........a lot in the wrong areas. Besides BP gets better pics to look at.

So this ended up getting postponed until now, but Panoramio will officially be gone by November 4 of this year. https://ssl.panoramio.com/maps-faq
Very disappointing. Yeah, there are some misplaced photos, especially in and near national parks, but I still found it to be the best place for seeing a map of quality geotagged photos. Google says they'll be moving a lot of the photos over to Google Maps, but it'll probably primarily be photos of places in cities. And maybe a few of Delicate Arch and other landmarks that they deem merit a marker on their maps.

Does anyone have any alternatives that they would recommend for once Panoramio is gone?

Now as for panaramio being officially soon gone ... interesting. I used to have a site with my photos over at Panaramio. I later had to delete the photos and walk away from panaramio - not enough protection for my photos it seems. I had also photos at another website which had to walk away from also. People were taking my photos and using them with any say so from myself. So now it has been some years that I have had nothing to do with panaramio. Now for several years have had a site over at zenfolio. It works fine. Have to pay for it but it works out for me.

Wishing Everyone the Best!

On of the hazards of posting.......words or pics on the free internet sites, they are open for anyone to use.....
