We love road trips! We spent several days exploring Montana and Wyoming (with a pit stop in Deadwood, South Dakota) visiting Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Teton National Parks. Below are our quick tips and reviews.

Our Itinerary:
Drive from Rapid City to Deadwood, SD (because we love the show!). Review: Would not make a special trip to see the city.
While in Deadwood, SD we also made a stop to see Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore to Billings, Montana and stopped for the night at The Northern Hotel (highly recommend)

Billings, MT to Jackson Hole, WY. Review: Definitely will be going back to Jackson Hole. We stayed at The Lodge at Jackson Hole and Wyoming Inn and at half the price of the Lodge, Wyoming Inn was surprisingly pleasant. We’ll stay at Wyoming Inn the next time we’re in Jackson Hole.

From Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park and Yellow Stone National Park are within 3 hours drive.

Jackson Hole, WY to Bozeman, MT where we stayed at the Gallatin River Lodge which we loved. See our separate video on the lodge.
Bozeman, MT to Whitefish, MT for Glacier National Park. We stayed at the Lodge at Whitefish but would not stay here again- the Lodge felt more like a college dorm.

Tip: Before our road trip, we purchased a family National Parks pass at REI and saved a great deal versus paying individually at each National Park.

An even better deal for the age advanced, 62+, is the FREE admission pass for Geezers. It also gets you half price camping at many National Forest and Park campgrounds.
I've done your itinerary several times. A great part of the USA. I would also recommend the Custer Battlefield (not sure of the exact name).

Old. Slow. "Smarter than the average bear."

The official name is Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. And x2 on the recommendation. Incredibly interesting history, especially if you do a little background reading before going.

Thank you.
"Crazy Horse and Custer" by Stephen Ambrose is a good read.

Just to clarify for folks "Jackson Hole" refers to the upper Snake River Valley including Grand Teton National Park and also the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort at Teton Village. You stayed in the town of Jackson, WY. A lot of people make this "mistake." Chamber of Commerce MArketing more than anything.

Wyoming Inn has always gotten great reviews. Fine place. Did you eat out here?

Ironically, the airport is also named Jackson Hole. Further confusing the geographic misunderstanding.

Absolutely! Buffalo steak and elk tartare. Highly recommend going there for dinner if you are in town.

I guess you could say Jackson, WY is in the hole but it's not the whole hole.
