Although home is in NYC, I've managed to get out to the Colorado Plateau on a number of occasions, particularly since getting the photography bug a few years back. By necessity, most of my photography (http://500px.com/rondiel) has been based nearer to home, though there are some Southwestern (and other) locales mixed in.

I'm planning to head out to Capitol Reef NP later this month for a week of backpacking / photography as a break between projects. Last year we were in Zion / Bryce and drove across state to Arches / Canyonlands, which gave us a far too brief opportunity to sample a bit of Capitol Reef. My intent is to make up for that and, since I'm not bringing my wife who can't get away from work, it gives me more opportunity to rough it a bit.

I stumbled onto this site with a google search and the information looks perfect for my planning, so - thanks to all who have posted. I plan to digest what's here before posting any questions, but will probably have a few. I know one concern that I'm wrestling with is the mix of lenses to bring, a pack is heavy enough without the camera gear.

Capitol Reef is an awesome place! I have a cousin back east who is a photographer. He has visited a few times before, but the last time I took him to Capitol Reef, and was surprised to see him so excited about it. He said it was his favorite place for pictures, and is now coming back out just to take pictures of the area in May. And the hiking is awesome. If you want to backpack, you can basically set up tent anywhere so long as your out of view of trail and road. You do have to get a permit though. Enjoy!
