I'll never swim Kern River again
It was there that I met her it was there I lost my best friend
And now I live in the mountains I drifted up here with the wind
And I may drown in still water
But I'll never swim Kern River again
I grew up in an oil town but my gusher never came in
And the river was a boundary where my darling and i used to swim
One night in the moonlight the swiftness swept her life away
And now I live on Lake Shasta
And Lake Shasta is where I will stay
South San Joaquin where the seeds of the dustbowl are found
And there's a place called Mount Whitney
From where the mighty Kern River comes down
Well it's not deep nor wide
But it's a mean piece of water my friend
And I may cross on the highway
But I'll never swim Kern River again

Sorry, I got distracted by Merle. :) It is a mean piece of water though.

Kern River - July 2017

It was blood donation day today, so today's hike was my old standby, Mount Wire.

We got our first big snow in northern Utah yesterday, so I was anxious to give Wire a try with the white stuff. Actually, Mount Wire just after a snow is a really beautiful hike, with snow on the scrub oak along the trail, and the valley air cleared out of the pollution.

Before. The Subaru is back! New starter motor, rotors, pads and one new caliper.

This guy and his dog were looping Wire three times. I was impressed.

I can't match @Titans and @Ugly's culinary expertise, but Saturday is pizza night at the Scat house and after a nice hike and donating a pint of blood, I could probably have eaten two of these - chicken garlic with green onions and tomatoes. :) I load my side up with veggies so I can pretend that it is good for me.

And along with the pizza, I'm planning on enjoying my one beer a week, a pecan pie porter.

The End

Absolutely gorgeous!

And ole Merle should've moved to Gusher, Utah (over by Ft. Duchesne).

You definitely got a lot more snow than we did. Dave Alvin does a great version of that song.

Tell me a little bit about Gusher.
According to the map, I've been through there recently, but don't remember a thing about it. That's all I can tell you, which might be saying a lot, but I don't know if it's about the town or about me.

Well done @scatman , you are committed to get outside! Even if it’s frosty. We also had a lot of wind hiking yesterday, but our summit temperature was about 95 degrees above your summit temperature. :roflmao: I’m confused about the one beer per week, is that because you hike once per week? Nice pizza @scatman , you deserved some carb after that hike.

The conifer, ouch… that’s a classic photo of “deer eats bottom 4 feet of every conifer”.

About five years ago I decided to limit my beer intake to one beer a week. My waistline doesn't need the extra carbs and calories. :) There are a couple of exceptions though. One, when I go to Portland to visit my kids, I usually have a couple of Terminator Stouts while I'm there. Second, is after, or between backpacking trips, where I will enjoy celebrating with my backpacking mates. Other than those, I've stuck to the one beer a week regiment pretty well.

First off, that pizza looks great!
Also, just a stiff wind on top of Wire? Maybe it was just because I had been out near the rising of the sun, but Saturday was very stiffly windy- but I guess Sunday was worse since Sunday most of my 9" of snow got blown to Herriman or Tooele even, and continues to try and blow everything I own that direction! Although I was in Park City this evening entertaining peeps from out of town, and it was not half as windy up there as when I got home, so maybe it is just windy here.

This is a fantastic report. That snow on the scrub and along the trail, just wonderful.

And … are those cucumbers on a pizza? Or zucchini? Now you’re really scaring me.

I was also a bit concerned that you were cucumbering your pizza! Maybe pickled cucumbers... but zucchini. Yes, That definitely looks good.
