I finally checked off a long-standing bucket list item: the high-altitude wonders of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. As someone who spends more time on the trail than in the office, I’ve seen my share of mountain lakes, but the sheer, crystalline blue of these waters—especially the calcified pools of Huanglong—is something that hits differently.

Route & Layering Strategy

The temperature swings in early spring are brutal. You’ll be sweating on the climb and freezing the moment you stop for a photo.

  • The Layers: I stuck to a classic 3-layer system. A moisture-wicking base, a breathable mid-layer, and a reliable tactical hardshell jacket for that biting wind at the high passes.
  • The Pants: I opted for durable multi-pocket tactical trousers. When you’re scrambling over stairs and navigating forest trails, you need fabric that moves with you and can take a beating from the occasional rock scrape.

Highlights & Beta (Photos Included)
  • Five Flower Lake (Photos 1 & 2): The absolute soul of Jiuzhaigou. Seeing the ancient, submerged trees resting under that surreal, turquoise water is something else. If you’re into photography, wearing earth tones (olive/coyote) really pops against that vibrant backdrop.

  • Nuorilang/Pearl Shoals Waterfalls (Photo 3): The sheer power is humbling. If your outer layer has a decent DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating, you can get right up to the spray zone without soaking through.

  • Huanglong’s Five-Color Pools (Photo 4): This is a lung-buster of a hike, but standing above these tiered, emerald-colored pools makes the oxygen deprivation worth it. Pro tip: Don't underestimate the UV at this altitude; a good pair of tactical sunglasses and a wide-brimmed cap are essential.

Field Notes: Gear Performance

Quick Beta for your trip:

  • Permits: Book well in advance. The area is highly regulated, and walk-ins are rarely accommodated during peak season.
  • Footwear: Stick to mid-to-high top hiking boots; the limestone stairs can be unforgiving on the ankles.
  • Leave No Trace: Let’s keep these waters pristine. Pack it in, pack it out.
