I'm taking my two nieces, 12 and 15, for their first adventure in Zion National Park this June. They just moved here from Estonia and haven't experienced America's awesome natural landscapes yet, so this is going to be a formative trip. The younger one is especially outdoorsy and is fascinated with the history of the west, especially native peoples and ancient art. Unfortunately all the good stuff I'm familiar with is in Eastern Utah (I would LOVE to take her to Horseshoe Canyon someday). Does anyone know any cool rock art, granaries, ruins, etc. that's not too far (a couple hours drive) from our base camp in Zion?

There is a panel just off the road in a wash but can be tricky to find. It is a short hike and seems to fit your needs. I have the waypoint saved on my old phone and I will IM it to you later today. Sorry for the crappy pictures but it was at night and with an old iPhone.

Are you looking for petroglyphs as well? There are some petroglyphs right after you come in the south entrance. They will even give you directions for these ones at the front desk at the visitors center. Are you

I did that and walked right past the wash they are in. It was covered with brush and hard to see coming from the direction we were traveling.

Wow, those are really cool. Yes, please send location info!

Awesome! Cave Valley looks like a cool adventure. I was going to take them in the Narrows but Cave Valley might be more unique. I'm also taking them to do Keyhole, so good to read about that one as well.

Nice! I didn't know you had started canyoneering!

I would suggest signing up for the shuttle ranger led tour! When I worked for the park it was my favorite thing I did. You stop in a few places that other shuttles cant. Typically most rangers will stop at menu falls for example.

The southgate petroglyphs (often called sacrifice rock because the rangers have sacrificed them by telling tourists their location lol) and petroglyph canyon (the earlier pictures are from here) are the two most known and published petroglyphs.

Great beginner canyon! Are you taking a course?

Yeah, the girls and I are taking the one from Zion Adventure Company, it's geared toward kids and introducing them to the outdoors. I'm so excited!

If your going up the main canyon there is a granary on the right hand side. I thinks it's just past weeping rock. You can see it from the road.

Really? One of my nieces was asking about granaries. She'll be so excited, thanks for letting me know!

Hmmm, is it better than the ZAC class? These girls don't have any outdoor experience, and I have zero canyoneering experience. I know they are really excited about the rappels (as is Auntie Laura!)
