Kings Peak (7/31-8/2)

On Monday (7/28) I decided that I was going to tackle Utah's highest point. I was going to drive down on Thursday and camp at the trailhead, then hike the 26 miles the following day. My only problem was that my pack couldn't decide on how long the hike would last. Coming in at 30 lbs, I could have stayed on the mountain for 2 additional uncomfortable days (my father raised me on the idea of being over prepared).

I learned a lot this trip :p
6:30 AM - I hit the trail with my Smartphone/potatocam.
3:00 PM - I made it to the peak (with my 30 lbs bag ).
5:30 PM - Random group offers me a spot next to their campfire for the night.
8:30 PM - Arrive at their campsite.
9:30 PM-5:00 AM - Toss and turn all night on a tarp with a space blanket and snowboard coat (I know, that was pretty dumb).
10:30 AM Arrive at car.

Nice. I attempted Kings Peak once and got hosed due to weather. I'm happy but jealous you made it. =) Too bad the random group didn't offer you a spot on a pad in a tent in a warm sleeping bag. Haha.

Haha My fingers were crossed.
I watched the weather every day and kept changing the trip date to avoid some poor weather.

Very nice! A trip up to King's early last summer was what re-awakened me to alpine backpacking after a multi-year hiatus from it and got me on track to discovering BCP soon after. I too learned a lot about pack weight and on the road to a better balance between comfort at camp and comfort on the back. Henry's Fork is a beautiful route, but next time I go, I'm hoping to incorporate Red Castle into a loop trip. Depending on other plans and vacation time, maybe I'll put out a BCP invite for that sometime next summer. Here's some pics from last year in late June. There was just enough snow left around to keep things nice and cool.
