Is it worth going into the Narrows in August?

I would go so far as to call them downright euphoric. Really a great hike, made much better by wearing the right footwear and using trekking poles or a walking stick.

I saw a video that recommended renting shoes and a wooden walking stick from an outfitter (it said trekking poles don't hold up as well for some reason). I'll definitely need to figure out those finer details once I have the more basic stuff hashed out.

The wooden staffs they rent certainly are more durable, but I would hate to hike with it. I like trekking poles, but I did bend a section on one of mine on my last trip through. They were out of warranty and it cost me like $20 to replace it from the Black Diamond Parts dept. The shoes they rent are 5.10 Canyoneers with neo socks and are seriously awesome in The Narrows.

Getting a permit shouldn't be hard if you plan ahead.

Haha ..... We had no poles and I did the entire trip from Lava to the TH and the entire narrows trip in Teva's. Look's like about 71/2 miles from Lava CG to the Virgin river confluence. Don't forget You have to get a shuttle or have two vehicles if you do the entire narrows.

You can always do Parunweep, the lower part is as nice as the narrows., the entire canyon isn't bad either.

Haha ,,,,,,,,,, no just old school back then, no such thing as 5.10 canyoneers.. but there were bushes to cut walking sticks from ;)
