I really enjoyed that, thanks Bob for posting! Fun to reminisce and see all the places. Couple of thoughts:

1) Videography was great and really did a nice job showing off the beauty of Idaho.
2) It's not just the aches and pains and struggles of any long-distance hike that'll get ya on the ICT. The ICT includes huge stretches of poorly maintained, abandoned, or otherwise outright terrible sections of trail. Large portions of it are burnt. They completely neglected to mention this added dimension of difficulty on the program, to their own detriment.
3) I thought the interviews with the founders are really special. Always cool to hear the stories of those who did it with absolutely nothing but their own wits.

Yeah the info at the bottom said it aired in 2006, and the older-style gear suggests that it could have been filmed even well prior to that. It's definitely languished over the years for lack of prioritization and funding.

I'll defer to you on that, as the entirety of my experience comes within the past decade. I will say though, that according to pretty much everybody, trails are objectively in a worse overall state than they were a decades ago.

Now, if you're talking about the old, old days, like a century ago? Definitely agree. I think there's a reason we've seen a proliferation in non-trail hiking routes in recent years - there's a certain satisfaction in leaving the herd for a while and doing your own thing.
