Hop Valley and La Verkin Creek - Zion National Park - October 11, 2024

I'd be interested in a trip. Scatman or no scatman even. Though I'm usually out that way in April/May.

Who gets to carry all the circus peanuts required to lead scat into the desert? That's the real question.
We can ro sham bo for it, or convince someone else to carry the heavy candy.

When I first met Hugh a couple years ago, we were sitting around eating breakfast or dinner and I asked him about the desert why he never posted any trip reports from southern Utah. He said basically what he said above, "if there aren't grizzlies, I'm not interested" :) I'm glad someone was able to drag him away from the GYE.

I must be getting soft in my old age. :)

I think there was a smile of satisfaction when the wilderness desk ranger said that we should hang our food from bears.

I'm guessing there wasn't a single bear within the park boundary when we were there.

I think Scat needs the pothole sipping and sand digging experiences........or maybe one where the only water tastes like drinking epsom salts, maybe where its 100+ and no shade ........ !!! Now these are REAL desert experiences

No sand digging for me @Bob. I've had plenty of nasty water. Once on the Pitchstone I had to get water out of an unnamed pond with a dead elk in it. Also, Bog Creek and Sour Creek water aren't the best, and leaves and floaties just add flavor. The more mosquito larva the better I say. :scatman:

Just bring enough to leave a circus peanut trail back to the trailhead so that I don't get lost. :D Are there any "Sketchy" (aka North Butte Creek sketchy) places in the desert? I've only got one good wrist left you know. :)

There's a lot of "interesting" spots in the desert. Perhaps some also qualify as sketchy. I usually carry 30 feet of tubular webbing when in the desert just in case... though I almost never use it.

If we do a desert trip I might have to leave the webbing behind to make room for circus peanuts!

We even have a choice of trips where there is a possibility of bears and at least mountain lions... or where a bobcat walked off with my camp cup.
