Hiking gaiters - anyone use them?

Thanks for reminding me.. now that I've been paying attention to the junk I get in my boots, I realize how much it actually happens. Just ordered myself a pair of Dirty Girls.

Looking forward to hearing about your Winds trip!

Follow up:

I am totally sold on the hiking gaiters! I wore them on my Wind Rivers trip on the hike in and out and my shoes and socks stayed clean!! I didn't wear them on our day hike up to Titcomb Basin and regretted it as my shoes got dirt in them and my socks were dirty with grass seeds and dirt.

Agreed! I forgot my gaiters on my last day hike (White Baldy) and I got a bunch of crap in my boots and my socks got very dirty. I had to stop a few times to clean out my boots. Not a huge deal, but definitely confirms how effective gaiters are and that I'll continue to wear them on most hikes/backpacks.

I finally got to really test out the Dirty Girls this past weekend. 4 days without a trail and lots of sand and prickly things along the way and I am sold. I wore them with my low Vasque Screes and they kept everything out. I am totally sold on them now. Highly recommended!

NEVER wear them...........unless in snow. Don't seem to have a problem getting rocks in my boots....
I can see how they would be handy if hiking in an area with lots of cheat grass seeds..

I had some OR gaiters that looked like yours - they were treated with permethrin to keep ticks off. Great for trail work but I usually thought they were more than I needed on hikes. I've been through a Dirty Girl phase as a point of style as much as anything - they are fun to wear but I'm not sure how effective they are. The Salomon hikers I'm wearing lately are so meshy the gaiters don't keep stuff out anyway so I haven't been wearing them.

Socks yes..... oh, and boots. gaiters are good for a tick problem.. Mesh sides don't cut in the mountains I hike....

But @Bob.. I went over Bloody Hell Pass following in your footsteps on an 82 miler in the Windies sporting mesh, low-ankle shoes with no gaiters.

Course I did wear high-tech socks.

Light makes right, mister. Especially on your feet.

haha......you are tougher than me. My ankles hurt.

Older makes wiser or older makes more pain .................. :)
