Help Me Plan Our Trip!

Thanks for responding. I really hope the weather cooperates and we're able to do this. What's a reasonable amount of time to plan to do this? (reasonable meaning leisurely :))

Also, what kind of footwear would one need to hike in the Gulch assuming it will be at least partially wet?
You could do this in 2 days (1 night in the canyon) and have a very pleasant and enjoyable trip. You'll be in and out of the stream, which for the most part is ankle deep. Chacos, old tennis shoes, ect- just about anything works for footwear since it's non-technical.

excellent, sounds like my kind of trip (pleasant and enjoyable), of course I'll be lugging a tripod and camera down there, so leisurely pace will be my m.o. :) I'll be looking for suggestions on where to be to shoot what earlier and later in the day (ideally)...

nothing too specific yet, but I found out that my travel buddy has time in early october that she didn't think she would before, so I'm hoping to do it closer to early October now... 10-12 days, pushing for closer to 12 :)
Still looking at Zion, Coyote Buttes North and South, and hopefully Coyote Gulch...

SO, it looks like my friend has Thurs, Oct 4-Mon Oct 15 set as available dates so I am probably going to fly in a day earlier (and leave a day later) to/from Vegas.... we arranged it so we'd have the two weekends in there... It would be cool to get together with anyone around who'd be up for hanging out with some east coasters (well, she's in Chicago now, but a Masshole through and through ;)

Dude. That is SO much better than November. Let's do a backpacking trip! I'm up for about anything. Coyote would be cool. I would also really like to hit Salt Creek in the fall. Or maybe a trip into Grand Gulch. Hmmm....

Coyote is high on my list, but it's not going anywhere, if you have any other/better/different suggestions...
I'd also like to do something overnight in Zion, but nothing too technical, if possible, and we are going to try to get Coyote Buttes North permits as she really wants to go see the wave, and I'd like to explore more of the area since I didn't see much last time (due to short days combined with out of shapedness :) ), might be able to camp out there and check out CBSouth the next or previous day too...

I'd also like to check out that zebra and possibly tunnel slot...

I think a huge key will be trying not to cram TOO much into that time, which we did last time. I saw a lot, but just scratched the surface...

I kept a blog of the trip:

and you can see at the beginning by the plans we had how ridiculous it was....

Well no matter how much or little you decide to cram, it would be awesome to tie down one of those weekends for an epic backpacking trip into Coyote or something. I can definitely commit to a 3-4 day trip. :)

it packs a whole lot of awesome for that price though...

my dream combination - the D800 with the Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 lens.
That's the tuition for one semester at my Community College :(
But I need an upgrade ... the sooner the better.

If you're having your camera in the next few weeks, I'm totally curious how you like it. The camera will definitely help to to get simply awesome pictures in October :)

I probably won't have it until mid or late May. i'm hoping to have it by the time I shoot my next wedding (end of May).
I'm also debating the D800E or just D800... There's so many extra things to buy too (vertical grip, battery holder, extra battery or two....it adds up so quick.

Okay, so we're still settling on dates, and I need advice. We basically have two options, one is shorter with longer days, the other longer with shorter days. The first option being flying in late Friday Oct 5 and flying home Monday Oct 15. The other option is flying in late Thursday Nov 8 and home late monday Nov 19. It's really only an extra day (in November) Is it worth having one extra day considering how much I'll probably want to try to squeeze into a week and a half?

Totally go for the earlier dates. The day light and conditions are well worth having one less day. No hesitation.
So, late December it is ;)
Thanks for the input... I'm trying to get my friend to squeeze an extra day on the end (16th), but having a real job is a bitch for most of the world ;)

Flights booked, I'm flying to Vegas Thursday Oct 4-Tuesday Oct 16... I am not exactly sure when my friend is flying in/out of Chicago yet, but I think she arrives on Friday the 5th..
