The area is called Devil's Kitchen (one of many) This is what it looks like if you climb down. It is near Shell Wyoming at the base of the Bighorn mountains.

This is a huge contrast to wilderness - 98% cultivated and famous to photographers - name the butte and region:

Pullman is indeed in the Palouse region, and this is Steptoe Butte. It's beautiful country, but no biodiversity at all and thereby kind of depressing to someone who likes wildlife and lots of birds.
