GARMIN inReach Consumer Subscription Plan Changes- Sept 2024

Talked to a rancher in Pinedale who uses OnX for elk hunts. Can see position of partners when offline if they're on the same operating system. Not sure what other advantage it has over using a free app like Avenza with Caltopo GPS-enabled maps.

OnX makes trip planning easy because it combines functionality typically gathered from multiple sources in to one app. I've used it for backcountry ski touring. In addition to all the table-stakes GPS/topo data, I get local avalanche forecast as well as user/crowd-sourced beta specific to the exact areas I'm passing through. I also like the 3D visualizations which helps understand terrain rather than relying solely on 2D slope shading.

Again though, this is all convenience and they aren't providing anything that can't be had by combining other apps and most of it can be found without actually having to pay for any of it.

Depending on your interests and participation in various clubs/groups, you may be able to get OnX access for free. For the last few years I've attended virtual seminars where the guest speakers were some outdoor celebrity type (think Cory Townsend for skiing) praising OnX, and by attending I received a free year's sub to the app.

Personally I wouldn't pay for it simply because I'm not constantly planning trips that would make it worth doing so, but for hunters or guides or what have you it might be a good investment.
