Big Dominguez Canyon is a 12 mile out and back trail located near Grand Junction, Colorado. The canyon offers scenic canyons, a river, railroad, streams, waterfalls, geologic features, desert bighorn sheep, Native American rock art, and early mining settlements. Backpackers can make a multi-day loop around Big and Little Dominguez canyons.

Bridgeport Trailhead is off Highway 50, approx. 20 miles south of Grand Junction. The turnoff from Hwy. 50 to Bridgeport Road is not well marked. The scenery is pretty while driving the good 3 miles of gravel road to the trailhead.

From the Bridgeport trailhead the trail runs along the railroad tracks. I was hoping to have a train pass by; but no luck. After about a mile you will see two bridges. The first bridge is private property. After crossing the second bridge you will be in the Big Dominguez Wilderness Area. The trail than follows the Gunnison River till you enter Dominguez Canyon.

With a good winter and spring this year Dominguez Canyon is alive with waterfalls. As you move up the canyon the stream is always nearby to cool off in or stop and have a snack.

The reason I picked this hike was to photograph the big horn sheep that live in the area. We didn't see any bighorn sheep, so I turned my attention to the incredible petroglyphs.

Dominguez Canyon is an amazing place to visit and explorer. I can't wait to return and do more photography in this amazing area.
