My wife and I are planning a trip to Escalante at the end of September to celebrate 15 years of marriage. My question is which way is quicker to Jacob Hamblin Arch. Red Well or Hurricane Wash? The only way I have entered the canyon is via the slab down from the water tank. I'm pretty sure my wife would shit if she knew I have taken my son down the slick rock at Jacob Hamblin Arch. I'm sure she wouldn't be down for that route either. I have measured my map and it looks like it's about the same either way. What would you recommend?

I've always heard that Hurricane Wash is much quicker than Red Well, but I don't have personal experience with both. Coming in from Chimney Rock into mid-Hurricane is supposed to be faster/more direct than about anything, assuming you're doing an out and back.

Yep, out and back. Thanks

If I were to take my GMC Acadia on Chimney Rock Rd. would I be ok? It's all wheel drive but not the best ground clearance.

I've never driven out to Chimney Rock, but I'd take an Acadia out on most of those roads. The biggest worry is probably just soft sand. Drive fast! :)

I'm sure your familiar with the road just past Goblin Valley on your way to Horse Shoe Canyon? I have never been when I haven't had to run the sand drift at the top of the road. Pushed and dug out a few mini vans. I would hate to be one of those people. All part of the fun I guess...:help:

Im doing a a Coyote Gulch trip in April and what was going to be me and my teens has turned into a bigger group - kids inviting other kids, etc. Are there group size restrictions? Are there any backcountry permits required? Thanks

The group size limit is 12 in the Escalante canyons, including Coyote Gulch. Permits are required but they are free and not limited. You can pick them up at the interagency office in Escalante (recommended for current conditions, etc.) or self-issue at most trailheads. Sometimes they're out so I usually stop at one of the trailheads before my destination and grab one. The Hwy 12 bridge or Devil's Garden is usually where I stop if I'm not passing by the VC.

Can I join the CG party?! Will be there in mid-June, planning to do the loop from the Water Tank -> Hurricane Wash -> Crack in the Wall. I think Nick posted a great TR of that route a while back?

I really can't wait. Should have done it last September but the whole Escalante area was a no-go thanks to that epic flooding...

Bring a good air pump you can plug into your car and then deflate the tires a little bit to help compensate for the loose sand. Then when you're back to pavement, finish fully inflating them.
