After Ingells, with the weather still bad on the crest, Jenny and I moved along to the Enchantments, a place we had been 9 years before. We got the permit easily as we were not looking for a through hike this time. Last time we climbed Dragontail and Prusik. This time we were looking to do Colchuck via the glacier. We spent a leisurely afternoon hiking up to the lake, in marginal weather. The next morning we took off up the big boulders and the moraine, toward the glacier. We forgot half our food and almost abandoned the effort, but we rationed and gave it a go. A few 40 degree hard snow sections were passed. Not much in the way of crevasses, but one had to stay to the middle and right to avoid the regular rock falls coming off Dragontail. We made the col, took off the crampons and headed up the mild class 3 ridge. Lots of pretty country up there. We spent an hour on the summit, before heading down and making our way to camp. We had the entire mountain to ourselves all day.
Crampon time
The top is up there somewhere
Looking down to the lake and camp
Dragontail which we climbed 9 years before
It levels off near the top
Argonaut Peak
Final summit block
The next morning, hike out day, Jenny shared a spot along the shore of Colchuck Lake. We ate breakfast as the early morning light sneaked through the clouds and provided quite the light show. Very special. Then we hiked out and on to the next adventure.
