Well...if it's truly a "survival" situation, don't you think they ought to talk about how you might find nice dry tinder in a hailstorm, rainstorm, or snowstorm? This article is about how to make a fire under perfect conditions....and yet that doesn't sound like survival to me.
 
Yeah. I admit it wasn't really applicable to survival even though that's what the title said it was for.
 
My steadfast opinion is that if you find you HAVE to build a fire, you already screwed up big time in the planning department. Whether or not you remove the fire ring, you have effectively killed the vegetation in that area for several years. And it's hard to hide the scorched rocks. I don't build them-period. I do dismantle them every chance I get.

I find Backpacker has close to zero relevance for myself.
