Cathedral Valley primitive camping

I mostly don't want to hang out in the wind. Cold is okay. Rain is even okay. But wind blows. That and I need sunshine for photos since the trails I was hiking were to be for work. Overcast/rainy just doesn't work for that. Crazy how cold it's supposed to get in Torrey.

I like this forecast better, most 'Torrey' forecasts are actually for Bryce. Unfortunately conditions for this page are in Hanksville, which of course is completely different. Weather underground has good current conditions for Torrey as there is a weather station at somebody's house, they place Torrey up on Parker Mountain though so their forecast is hopeless. I've been telling them for 10 years.

I agree about the wind, it is definitely the windy season in Torrey.

I remember lower muley about this time last year, highest winds I've ever experienced. Gusts of 55!

I should say that I was just down in Boulder for a similar forecast, like @slc_dan. It was great weather watching with a lot of dry windows for hiking, beautiful drama in the sky all around, and my tent did a job at keeping us dry when it pored at night. I would think of that forecast as a big + for your weekend. Maybe not backpacking or for your project, but a great time to be there all in all.

Drama is good. I'm just gonna stick around and sneak in local hikes when the sun pokes out. ~40 more trails to go before I'm done and I can get to go back to my normal kind of camping/backpacking routine. I'm slacking pretty bad on the bag nights so far this year.

We were thinking about doing the Cathedral Valley loop this weekend. Does anyone have any info about the condition of the road, especially after last weekend's storms? We have a 4WD Toyota forerunner.

No problem, I did the loop Tue & Wed, on Tuesday we couldn't get over the Bentonite Hills but they had dried by Wednesday. The road over from Cathedral Valley to UT72 is not open yet but the loop is fine. The flowers are amazing.

Had some friends go over this weekend - the mountain is open!

Thanks, Bob! Really great info. Tragically, we stayed home last weekend to deal with work stuff. We're headed south for a boat trip this weekend, so it's looking like we may not make it to Cathedral Valley until mid-June at this point.

The campground has great views close by and is not likely to be busy at any time of the year. That said, I skipped it. While I'm sure it would have run afoul of park regs, I just slept in the back of my car at Temple of the Moon. I arrived late and left early to avoid drawing attention.

I'd assume there are places to pull out along the Caineville road outside of the park but I've not searched myself.

Actually, last month when I asked one of the Rangers she pointed out that the entrance to the Park from BLM property is only about a mile from the two Temples and you're free to camp / sleep there without any issues (which she said she has done as well). I'd agree with your views as well that there won't be anyone stopping by to hassle you if you're further into the area late at night.

Just don't camp somewhere next to the Temples where you will be in the sightline of sunrise photographers. If I leave Torrey at 4:15am, as I will tomorrow, and find people camped in my views I'm likely to be quite grumpy!

Any of yall see the naked chick getting photographed out there a few weeks back? Early May sometime, can't remember. Older lady, had a guy toting a tripod, taking nude photos at different locations along the inner road going out to Cathedral.
