My wife and I have decided it is finally time to take our two little girls camping. we are thinking of somewhere down south in early to mid October. I would like to avoid busy campgrounds, so am looking for somewhere I could car camp that is accessible via 4 door Sedan. Any suggestions?

Nevermind.

Just kidding. October should be a fun time. How old are your kids? I think little wildhorse and Goblin Valley are tough to beat for kids. That being said, it might be a little busy. There are some great spots outside goblin valley on BLM land with primitive campnig where you should be able to get your own spot.

Moab is a magical place too. I recommend taking them to Sand Dune Arch in Arches. Kids like the little sand dune just north of town as well. Tons of fun stuff to do there.

The Mule Canyon parking area on Cedar Mesa. Not the "official" one on the highway, but on the dirt road where it crosses north mule, just on the other side of the bridge. Good water right there, access to Mule Canyon and it's wonders, safe for kids, lot's of room and slickrock. A favorite family spot over the years.

Ha. I don't mind a few crowds. Mostly I am trying to avoid the situation my wife and I were in last time we went to Moab. We were in a campground and the guy next to us was coughing up his lung for the entire night, and the guy on the other side of us was talking loudly on his cell phone until 12:30 at night. That pretty much ruined established campgrounds for me.

Not sure if you want desert or green but, one of my favorites spots is the Dixie NF. Since you will have the kids, above Escalante is a quiet spot called Posey lake stocked with Rainbows and if you bring something that floats you will kill them. They also have latrines and water for the kids. It sits just under 9000' and the aspens should be in full swing in the first week of October. (N 37.937367, W 111.696422). There are also more remote campgrounds with even fewer people on the way to Hells Backbone.
