Sooooooo many of these caterpillars in Death Valley last week - all different sizes/instars - they're white-lined sphinx moths and the host plant we saw them on was brown-eyed primrose

I spotted a tiny glow on a road cut on my night hike. Upon closer investigation, I found a firefly larva, the first I've seen locally.

Even being from Arizona, this makes me squeemish. I had a fear of spiders as a child and have mostly tamed it in regards to the size of spiders one might typically see. However, I never built up a tolerance to large spiders, especially not this big. Thankfully I'm mostly in my tent in the nighttime hours .

Some of the kids and I went and had dinner last night.
There must have been a hatch going on. Mixed in with the gnats were some mosquitoes and black midges, but most were just annoying.


Also, more bugs with a raven.
