Well, I somehow made it to 60 years old, so to celebrate my 60th I summited Mount Nebo with my friend Jon.
Now we are down to 17 days until the Deer Creek/Hidden Creek big adventure that @Bob has dreamed up in the Washakie and Teton Wildernesses, so I figured a training hike up Nebo might just get me to Deer Creek Pass in a couple of weeks. Still not sure how I will make it from the Hidden Creek drainage over to the North Fork of the Yellowstone.
Mount Nebo is the highest peak in the Wasatch at just under 12,000 feet (11,928). While it isn't the hardest peak to summit in the Wasatch, it is still a challenging one and just what I need if I want to make it to Deer Creek Pass.
On the drive up Payson Canyon on the way to the Nebo Trailhead, I saw 11 deer, 1 grouse, and three turkeys, along with a few bovines. Also, the sunrise was spectacular! There is some smoke in the air here, though I'm not sure which forest fire is to blame, that is obviously contributing to the nice sunrises recently.
I arrived at the trailed at 6:25 in the morning and waited a few minutes for Jon to show up, and then we were on our way.

Mount Nebo in the early morning hours

Gorgeous sunrise. We passed a couple of guys on our way up that were coming down who got to witness this from the summit
of Nebo.

Already a few cars at the trailhead

Mount Nebo information at the trailhead

Tall larkspur

Sulphur buckwheat beginning to bloom

A ladybug enjoying the morning sunshine and some fernleaf licorice-root

Lupine

looking up at the slopes of North Peak. Our trail to Nebo will duck down on the west side of the ridge

Whipple's penstemon

Diurnal moth - we saw lots of these

Columbine

Ants enjoying some aphids

Sulphur Indian Paintbrush

Aster? Fleabane?

Making our way up to the top of the ridge

Bluebells

Buttercup

Past its prime Parry's Primrose

Still some snow here and there

Showy goldeneye

Wasatch beardtongue

Jon making his way up the hill

Jacob's ladder

Some yarrow and cinquefoil

View to the north with Bald Mountain

Almost to the top of the ridge

Mountain dandelions

Jon, pointing out our destination

Looking down Pole Canyon and out into Juab Valley and Mona Reservoir

A good look at Mount Nebo along with the false summit

Stonecrop

Paintbrush

Paintbrush

Groundsel

Not sure it's getting any closer.
We are making our way around the west side of
North Peak.

Collomia

Lewis Flax

Common yarrow

More groundsel

False summit and Mount Nebo. It is a steep climb up the false summit.

The trail leading to Wolf Pass

A couple of people on the false summit

Stonecrop, buckwheat and paintbrush

Approaching Wolf Pass

A look up the false summit from Wolf Pass. My knees were beginning to whimper.

A look down into Hellhole Basin and the Nebo Basin from the pass

A look back up at North Peak

On my way up the false summit. I might be cussing at this point.

Some rock columbine

Some hikers on the North Peak.

Phlox

Groundsel

Mount Nebo, peeking around the corner of the false summit

Hiker about to summit Nebo

On the false summit, looking over at Mount Nebo

On the way over to Nebo from the false summit

Scrambling time

After the scramble you're still not quite to the summit. Notice the butterflies.

Just a short jaunt to the summit from here

Looking south, over at Middle Nebo and South Nebo from the summit of Mount Nebo

A raven showing off with summit of South Nebo beyond
Mountain goats were cooling off on the snowfields below the summit

Not the best, but zoomed on on them

And if you look closely, there are some bighorn sheep below too.

Summit shot

These California Tortoiseshells were all over the summit of Mount Nebo. I have never seen so many butterflies in one place before.
Maybe they are migrating?

Beginning the hike back down. My knees weren't too excited about this either.

Can just make out the southern end of Utah Lake in the distance

Heading back to the false summit

Western wallflower

The trail heads along the top of the red rock below

The workhorse of this hike - Canon Rebel SL2, Canon PowerShot S200, and the Canon PowerShot SX160 IS

Coming down off the ridge

Northwestern Fritillary on the snow

Common stickseed

Parry's primrose in the sunlight

A look down Nebo Basin

Just follow the ridgeline back to the trailhead now

The North Peak in the afternoon

The trailhead is within sight

Back at the Sube!
This is the "What's Cooking" for @Rockskipper. I told Sheila that if I made it home before 6:00 pm, then we could go out for dinner to someplace close.

Sheila had the pineapple pork sandwich with potato salad

While I had a 1/2 rack of ribs with a mac-n-cheese side and a roll (I thought I was supposed to get a hushpuppy)
I don't think it
was enough to feed a hungry Scatman.
We'll be celebrating the 60th and the Mount Nebo summit with nachos from the Porcupine tonight! Can't wait!
The End.
