I don't know that it wasn't successful. In my mind, I think that a black and white photo should have some part that's all black and some part that's all white. Your photo certainly has that. And it's really effective in that it draws attention to the tree which is what I think your intention was. In that way it's much better than the color version. If there was one way to make it better, I think it would be to try to darken the foreground so that its more grey - less bright. I think that would help make the tree really pop.

True, I will try adjusting it to not be as bright. That's probably what's off to me.

Old patterns in sandstone fascinate me. There are a couple spots in the Red River Gorge where there are very interesting patterns. I end up photographing these places every time I pass by.

This is a large rock (about 6 feet high and 12 feet wide that has tree roots wrapped around it. The roots complement the rock.
