I've been unable to do much for over a month with a severely pulled hamstring which has left my entire leg down to my toes black and blue. Doc said it would be good to keep moving as opposed to just laying around with my leg elevated. And as long as I kept dosed up with Naproxin and / or ibuprofen to keep the pain at bay.

I've been eyeballing maps of the Bisti area (AKA De-Na-Zin) in NM for quite a while and decided to head that way and take my chances with my condition. The bad part was that there's no cell service in that location but figured (hoped) there'd be others in that area that may be within shouting distance if something happened. Ya, right.

Arriving in the late afternoon, I set up "camp".

Within a short distance of camp the jumble of hoodos and convoluted passageways began.

Interesting and fragile looking formation. Kinda like a moose ear? I think it was about 8+ feet of cantilever.

Let the hoodoos begin

I decided to head back. My leg was not cooperating but before leaving the area, I checked out some trailheads for my next visit. Bisti is a HUGE area and much more to see than just hoodoos.

Originally I was thinking a minimum of 2 days. But next time I go I'm planning on 3 days. Some of the hikes are 8+ miles. Be aware that if any rain has occurred, don't even think about going until the roads are dry.

I tried to head to Bisti just after Thanksgiving 2013 with a friend, and got stuck in freezing fog for two days... we didn't see anything, and now I'm bummed that I missed all this cool stuff! Time to plan a return trip. Great pictures.
