Finally did another overnighter that didn't turn into a long dayhike.
Went back to the Jacks River Trail in GA's Cohutta Wilderness.
Uhhhh, kinda less engaging than the first time, which was new and different due to the constant water crossings, but still a great hike. Last time, I found this fantastic campsite the next morning, right past the one I'd used, so I knew exactly where I was headed.
It has a nice backdrop,


..its own little waterfall,


...its own private beach and swimming hole(don't know what's up with the video settings, but I am not THAT pale!),


...and a nice fire ring.


Forecast for the area showed a low of 62. It went to about 50. Glorious!

The 2" of rain that a ranger I met at the TH warned me they were now expecting did not materialize(met that otw home through N. GA and N. AL), but I enjoyed her expression when my only response was "Oh, cool!"
I was hoping the waterfalls might be cranked up this morning, but such was not the case. As it was, it rained the entire time, but never heavily.
I love the Collins Gulf Trail at Savage Gulf(S. Cumberland SP, TN), and a loop that includes it is one of my favorite quickie/short notice overnighters. This ended up being an in/out, though, as the same ranger warned me away from the trails I normally connect it with due to an ongoing and incomplete cleanup.

The Gulf was Savagely moist!

Claiming this one, though it was more like a bag nap than bag night, since I packed up in the dark, and drove home.
What a disaster. No flat spots in the campsite, moved my Solomid XL 3-4 times, broke 1 6" Easton stake, and bent another. Big rock I grabbed to cover a stake was over an ant bed, so I had ants down my bare legs, biting me, and in my socks. Then, after using both shoes and my pillow to try to level it out, my 5yr old Exped inflatable blew a baffle.
The park's map only showed the RV hookup sites, and I'd assumed the primitive sites were on the other side of the lake, but it turned out they were crammed into undesirable spots between the first few RV ones, and otw in/out for the RV and motorcycle touring folks. Got woke up by the motorcyclists right next to me cranking up to go find a store or something, and decided I'd had enough of this frontcountry camping crap.

The good news is that I recently found out we have the biggest natural bridge this side of the Rockies in W. Alabama, and stopped there on the way to MS. Busy touristy spot that's privately owned and charges admission, but pretty awesome, nonetheless. I've said it before, but the problem with the bigger arches and bridges in the East is that the terrain and tree cover means that if you're far enough away to get the whole thing in a pic, you can't see the whole thing any more!

I'd like to go back early in the morning, or when there's heavy cloud cover, and try for better pics. These from my phone are about as good as the ones from my camera.
No front-country sites for me, or wandering into Mississippi, if I do!

Had to edit my list after realizing I somehow missed one back in May.
This week, I kept it close to home, and did a little 13ish mile loop in the Cheaha Wilderness, Talladega NF, AL.
Surprising number of people on the trails for a week day, 3 right where I had planned to camp last night, and 11 dayhikers otw out this morning.

Corona loose on the trail again Ended up doing trail maintenance in a few places.
It's amazing how much work you can get done with this little 6.25oz folding saw if you put your mind to it.

Grandfather Mountain via Profile Trail. Halloween, a blue moon, and measured 54mph winds at the visitor center/end point.

Looks like I forgot to put in my mid October trip, so here's a double post! Both of my recent trips have just been solo trips (with Sage along). Put down quite a few new pins on my camp map in the south-central Utah vicinity. These were the last trips in my camper as the new buyer came and picked it up today. It was nice to squeeze in another 6 bag nights in it after making the deal.
