Album Arches & Natural Bridges

when is the best time to take pictures of Druid Arch? Early morning?
I have read that, because the face of it faces east and would be at it's brightest before the sun reaches its crest, but I have seen many photos taken in the afternoon that I like a lot. It has a lot of dark spots on the face of the arch and I think they look cool in the shade. The afternoon darkness of it adds to it's mystique I think.

Jeez you guys are insane photographers. I couldn't go down the list w/out liking each of these posts. Nice work!

Here are two not posted yet that I really enjoyed hiking to. I love the fisheye for stuff like this.

That is a killer perspective on Escalante Bridge, barl0w. I've hiked past it so many times but never gone in that close. I'll have to remember to get in there next time!

I was just reading the HDR thread and remembered this set of pictures - not intended to look realistic, I just like the way they glow, the sandstone does glow in certain lights though not quite as bright as this.

just a reminder to a few of you.... Nick recently mentioned that NPS regularly checks the site & I noticed that there are a few pictures with people on top of arches that are in national parks & i just wanted to point out that you are posting documentation of something that is technically illegal.
I know that it is definitely the policy at Arches NP that walking on top of any arch on a USGS map is illegal & I would guess that Canyonlands ISky has a similar policy since the administration between the two parks is shared.
just so ya know ;)

I thought it was only if you used some sort of aid like climbing gear.

that's what I thought when I took that shot with those German tourists on top of Double Arch.

It would be interesting to the read the actual policy rather then the dumbed down website version. Now if they could only crack down on people scratching their names into the sandstone.....
I thought the same thing when reading the online version.
When I was doing Interp there, I was told to call in any arch climbing/walking sightings to the LE rangers.
I had recently found a great article about the policy change back in 2006 but can't seem to relocate it. If I find it I will post a link.
I think Jim Stiles recently covered it a bit in an article he wrote in the Canyon Country Zephyr.
