2014 REI Dividends

I ended up selling our old gigantic car camping tent and took the proceeds, my dividend and the 20% and picked up an REI Kingdom 4 with the Connect Tech Garage vestibule thing. I decided I might be able to get enough shade out of that garage with some extra poles to spread it out that an actual shade shelter might not be needed. Should be great for the boat camping trips I have planned this year.

Hey Nick, great tent! I have the Kingdom 6 (plus garage) and love it! Now that the kids are getting bigger I'm wondering if REI will let me trade it in for the 8. :)

Nice! Do you ever setup the garage in awning mode with extended poles? If so, does it work pretty well? And what poles did you get to do that?

When car camping with the family here in the North East I stick mainly to the state parks—lots of trees and shade. Our car camping friends usually bring a screen house with them, which is better for hanging out when in need of shade as it fits right over the picnic table found at most sites. If it was just the wife and I, without the kids, however, I could see maybe hanging out in the garage.

I did put it in awning mode with my hiking poles once or twice but the garage itself is fairly low. Not too easy to move around in. It worked fine when I staked down my poles. I usually just roll it back or leave it closed for privacy.

The garage is typically where we keep our coolers and stuff other stuff we want to keep out of the sun. It makes a great cover for the front door so we don't bring dirt or let rain in. I have a nice door mat that I leave in front and an old area rug that I put in the front room of the tent. Quite the palace.
