It is just below the Lake Powell high water mark. In fact there is drift wood in the first room of the cave. It goes back a ways. Sounds like you had an amazing float. I was thinking of your upcoming trip while I was down there.
Rain and snow were forecast nearby for the entire weekend, but we gambled on reasonable weather below the rim of Dark Canyon and enough breaks in the weather to wander up and down canyon and see the best of Lower Dark. We were a group of four and spent four days, three nights below the rim. I...
I did some research too and came up with nothing. There are reasonable bypasses up and down both X and Y, but for a couple of them it took some searching. Y is certainly the easier of the two.
On a river trip through Cataract Canyon last fall, two side canyons converging from the Needles side of the river caught my eye eight or so miles below the confluence. I thought of these for a possible loop hike back into Cataract. I put it at the top of my list for spring trips and gave it a go...
I did a loop similar to Joey with Upper/Lower Spring, Grand, and the Frying Pan, starting at Holt Draw, but minus Sulphur Creek at the end. I regret not finishing through Sulphur; road walked instead attempting and failing at hitch hiking back to Holt. Very nice route.
If you are going to have a few days around Vernal, go spend some time in Dinosaur National Monument. Beyond just going to the quarry, there is some quality backcountry in Dino NM. May need to rent a car though... See if you can get a permit for Jones Hole (in Dino) as an overnight (and get a...
I've really enjoyed the Hennessy Hammock. Overhead cover, versatility (can ground pitch with trekking poles), bug protection, and comfort. Hammocks don't work for everyone, but a lot of folks will tell you that it is the best sleep you can get on the trail.
Andrew Skurka's blog has a 3-part...
That section was June 23-26, 2012. The only snow I recall crossing was in the vicinity of Desolation, Porter Fork, and Mt Raymond and it was very very little. There may have been a little near Catherine Pass. Great section of trail. I'm especially fond of the southern half: Baldy, Chris...
The tar comes off easy at home with soap and water.
There is some smell, but it isn't too obnoxious (but you don't want to be hovering over it inhaling it for health reasons). You can also buy a brownish off brand tablet that burns longer... yet smells worse. Esbit brand isn't too bad...
Funny you should ask. That was my ten-year-old's science project this year. She is presenting it tomorrow at the school (and Dad is super proud) Esbit wins over alcohol.
She looked at fuel efficiency by fuel weight consumed of: Esbit (on a wing stove), denatured alcohol (on a fancy...
I use this style of wing stove. http://bit.ly/1dyGMoi It should accommodate just about any size pot or mug you pack.
I use a doubled over length of heavy duty aluminum foil as a wind screen.
A couple things to note: It does leave some gummy tar residue on the bottom of the pot, but it is...
Wow! That's the guy. Reading from the site he did the Wasatch section in the early 1990s which would be just about when I remember meeting him at the bottom of Bear Canyon in the South Fork of American Fork Canyon in the Wasatch. Thanks so much for the tip, Regan! I'll be getting a copy.
I don't think you would find a good hammock hang in most of Needles. You will find trees, but not suitable for hanging.

In January, I could do MLK weekend or the weekend after. In February, I could do the weekend prior to Presidents Day weekend or the weekend after Presidents Day weekend (but not Presidents Day Weekend).

I have a Hennesy Hammock that I really enjoy for bug season. Whether wet or dry, it's so nice to keep all the gear off the ground and it is a zip-in setup so it's a combo hammock and bug net. Cat-cut tarp for overhead cover too. I haven't yet explored under-quilts much, but I'm really anxious...
