Could be true. I've heard that story. I've heard several different stories, and don't know who I believe. It's definitely been on people's radar since the 1990's. I've also heard word got out after a longtime park employee died, and his journal was read.

You can still backpack out there. It's only closed to overnight use in the Pelican Valley.

The Polecat and Spirea creek drainages coming off the Pitchstone Plateau. Just northwest of the South entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Lots of hot springs out there. That area was pretty close to the fire this year, but I don't think the fire ever crossed the park boundary. I may be wrong.

Actually, we didn't have to walk through them this time. Maybe it had something to do with it being late in the year and the vegetation not being so thick. But we were able to skirt that whole willows part by carefully walking the river bank.
