Loved the shoelace thing! I was there in March and wore gaiters after retying my shoelaces 400 x. Sad about the all American man, at least it's just chalk but it's really crazy that someone would do that.
Always a great place to escape the heat of Southern Utah, the Pine Valley Mts. offer solitude and green. I did this as an overnight but it could be a long day hike.

If you're talking about Canaan Mt. it depends on what you want to see. If you want to see the arch, go up squirrel. It's also easier to go up squirrel then water so for a loop, I always choose that way. The route finding especially by squirrel can be tricky as there are old ATV trails and...
The buses are great for handling the majority of the people. Most of us know how and where to get away where there are very few people. The greatest protection a wilderness has is the amount of effort (physically) it takes to get to it.
I'd just have something warm in case you got cold and wet. I'm a big smartwool or fleece person. Still warm when wet and lightweight. Also makes a great pillow at night. :)
Hop Valley and the slickrock area of the East rim trail will be the hot parts if the weather is as usual in July. I did the traditional TZ in 2012 in June. I took a nice dunk in the Virgin before heading up East Rim. Walked the road to make it all official. The one advantage I had was that...

Dry bags yes, wet suits no. Just in case you fall or want to float in the deep areas. Good luck with the Vegas thing after all those days in the wilderness. We did that after a Grand Canyon dory trip and were totally overwhelmed. Might work for you though. I'll be hoping for good weather...
I love sleeping with the sound of water. I can picture the moon as well. You wake up in the middle of the night and don't even care because you're relishing the sights and sounds.
The weather was threatening to cancel us in the days before but luckily cleared and we spent 3 nights in the Paria last week. Spring flowers were great. Enjoyed seeing how the canyon unfolded on it's way to the Colorado.

I loved the four faces! When I was there I camped in SC3 and ended up with a relaxed evening so I was able to ponder them as much as I pleased. I only hope that they stay unspoiled so everyone can enjoy them as much.
Elevation gain/loss was 2656. The start and finish were steep and had small climbs with good handholds. I took the traditional route (South Canyon off of House Rock Road then road 632) as I was solo and had a backpack. The hikers I met on the beach took the "UPS route". They said it cut off...
South canyon hike to the Grand Canyon. A steep and rocky hike to a beautiful set of beaches and Vasey's Paradise.
I was staying one night. Kept my pack-an ultralight-to 20 lbs with a gallon of water fully loaded. I was really glad as there were scrambles which would have been difficult with...
I was there at the beginning of March and had to park 2 miles from Cathedral Butte. I had to cancel once due to the snow and had no problems with permits. They credited the first set to my next trip without even being asked. I was down three nights and didn't see a soul till hiking out. I...
I have hiked to beartrap a few times and never been disappointed. I agree that the trail is the best after you leave the main section. There is supposed to be a lake a couple of miles further but I haven't made it there yet. Your pictures are amazing!
