I think the best choice is related to where you're going. If you're someplace like the Uintas, where the water is pretty clear, then SteriPENs are great. That's what I use. However, in the Glen Canyon area or Coyote Gulch, your water would still be pretty nasty. Even if it's sterilized...

Usually by late August there aren't many mosquitoes. I was there in early-mid August last year and hardly saw one.

Have you considered treating your clothing in permethrin? All of those mosquitos would have died on impact if you had.

And with any luck, as the trip goes on, conditions will improve too. I'll take three passes early, but the gnarliest passes like Red Knob and Dead Horse are late in the trip. I think I'll be fine too, but I'm certainly watching on the ground conditions with an eagle eye this next week or so.

My biggest concern is the big passes I'm hoping to cross, with a rookie 13 year old and no ice axes or crampons. My second biggest concern is post-holing or crossing big snowfields. My third biggest concern is out of control water and mosquitoes. But again; I'll attempt my original plan, but...
