Yeah--except that when it comes times to vote, the people you have directed out of the wilderness will see no reason to protect it.

    USFS budget cuts

This is an excellent video on the coming financial crunch for the department that maintains and supervises our trails and wildernesses. Next year's budget calls for massive cuts in their funding. https://youtu.be/d24PTLHEu_Q And one place they are going to be cutting is in the hiring of...

FS Losing Most of its Trail Workers!

I don't even think it's a concern abou that. These same young people often go to Soul Cycle and sweat bullets. But the idea of spending their time outdoors, while they could be working at an internship that leads to a career in software, is a hard one to make.

FS Losing Most of its Trail Workers!

^^^ This. And I hear from the rangers that I work with that they can't even fill the positions they have. When I was young I would have LOVED to get paid to work in the mountains, and everyone was making minimum wage. These days, young people seems to prefer to work indoors...and may even...

    Jordan and Egypt

It IS beautiful. And there may be ways to explore it away from the madding crowds. But the visitor center is also home base for a large fleet of 4x4s that have, as near as I could tell, free run of the whole area. Meanwhile, if you are interested in hiking in Jordan, I have heard and read...

    Jordan and Egypt

I just spent almost three weeks there as a tourist. To answer the most basic questions: 1. Yes, I felt completely safe in both countries. Tourism was down 95% in Jordan, 60% in Egypt, and man, was everyone happy to see us! 2. Yes, we did this as part of an organized trip via Ama Waterways, so...

    Condors!

Excellent! They are amazsing birds. We had a funny experience in El Chalten, Argentina. We’d just finished hiking the Cerro del Aguila trail there (Patagonia, for those keeping track at home) in the hopes of seeing condors, but were skunked. So we came back to the trailhead to talk to a...
