    Hard work on the trail--literally

Awesome work! Too many times have I run and walked trails that are rutted deeply by bikes (motor and human powered) to the point that you can't find a flat place to put your foot. That's a good solution with the large rocks.

    Coffee!!

That's hard core. Maybe next time I'll just dump the instant coffee packet directly into my mouth.

    To Do in 2023

I failed my only stated goal: to do a trip in the Bob, despite even being invited on one. Got multiple other good ones in though. Can't complain! I need to just make my goal for next year be what I actually have planned so far. Haha. Those ones usually happen.

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

Thank you! I wonder if with the Pitchstone Plateau, it's just long enough distances to get anywhere on a dayhike that most people don't bother. Phantom Fumarole isn't ridiculously far, but I imagine your average day hiker isn't going to want to put in the 9-10 miles mostly through patchy forest...

    Zion Fees UP

So is the day-use permit the same as the entry fee or are they separate?

    Tricked in the canyon!

Incredible shots! Wonderful looking day out there. And that food looks just as good as the scenery!

    2023 on the Gravel Bike

    Absolutely! Just let me know!

    2023 on the Gravel Bike

Thanks! It really kicked our butts that day. My friend was telling me about how he's never bonked in his life until we did that ride. And he regularly goes and runs 10+ miles a few times a week. I need to rethink the nutrition for those rides.

    2023 on the Gravel Bike

Spring - Fall 2023 Here's something a little different. I'm posting it in "off-road" because I generally covered ground that would fall into this category if I had been in a motor vehicle. A bike's a vehicle, just with me as the motor instead, so I'm counting it. It's side country rather than...

    DeLacy to Dogshead

With a solid breeze I'm not so sure, but they definitely work outside. My guess is they're less effective with wind.

    A Perfect Winter's Day

Good to see you're out on the xc skis! El Niño has got us in the crosshairs here in Montana. Weakest start to winter that I've seen here so far. So desperate that I'm looking forward to our slight chance of a little snow this weekend.

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

Thanks! That's interesting about the water. I figured if there's water in early October, it's probably running year-round unless there's a deep drought. I can't imagine hauling a gallon of water up that hill with a full pack!! Talk about challenging. It would be really fun to spend a few days...

    DeLacy to Dogshead

Oh yeah! Chet, one of the guys with me on this trip, has a thermocell but forgot to bring it on this trip. We lamented that several times as we were sitting at camp haha. It's a great place! Glad I made it there twice this year, although the second time wasn't nearly as pleasant. Haha. Would...

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

Ahh ok. I appreciate the insight. I'd still probably brave the beaver mess to save the quarter mile haha. I didn't see any signs, logs across the trail, etc. to indicate that we should head one way over another. I do think I saw where the other trail joins in, and it looked pretty lightly used.

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

I wish one of us had tracked the off-trail portion. Andrew just watched where we were on the map but didn't track. I would've had a much tougher time doing it as an uphill. It was pretty pleasant going down, for the most part! Yes the beavers seem to be winning by a big margin. Haha. I'm...

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

My friends always lament not having their rods and/or not having enough time to fish various spots out there. Lots of great looking spots on the Bechler and on Shoshone Creek!

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

Yeah I thought the dam would give out under me at any second! I was the first across and it held for all of us. I thought the cage things were just to create a bit of space where water would flow and beavers couldn't block the flow, but I'm not actually educated on that. Haha. So I can't say...

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

I think the only solution for that spot is to swing really wide toward Douglas Knob. Or just wear waterproof boots and gaiters and go for it like I did. Haha. Hope you go over there again! Easily the spot I've spent the most time in in the park, and I'll never get tired of it.

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

September 29 - October 3, 2023 This is the fourth year in a row we've done this sort of trip at the end of September/beginning of October, hence the thread title. The route was a little different this time since we wanted to see the Pitchstone Plateau and some other areas, and also because, for...

    Guess the spot: Maps Edition

Missed one on my original home turf! Haha. Never made it quite to that area before, but that whole Hoosier NF, Yellowwood SF, Morgan-Monroe SF, etc. area is fantastic. Incredible road cycling back in there, and some good hiking and mountain biking too.
