West Fork Blacks Fork, week of June 29th

The next day, we went to Dead Horse Lake and otherwise explored the basin. My camera battery was running low, so after taking tons of pictures at the lake, I toned it way down. I ended up letting my son talk me out of going very high up the pass or going in search of Lake Ejod, and instead we...

West Fork Blacks Fork, week of June 29th

Due to some unforeseen complications, we didn't get nearly as early a start the next morning as I wished. We drove to the West Fork Blacks Fork trailhead--or, well, to be technical we drove to the ford and parked there, walking an extra mile and a half or so to the actual trailhead. By...

West Fork Blacks Fork, week of June 29th

Spent the last week at West Fork Blacks Fork, after a day of getting acclimated at Bear River Campground first. Took my 13 year old son and explored the Mirror Lake Highway for a bit, and then dove into the back country for a few days. My son decided that backpacking may not be for him; he was...

    Uintas Conditions 2015

I was there; it's not free of snow. It looked passable without too much trouble, but there was still a fair bit of snow visible on the pass last week.

    Water On The Trail

I think the best choice is related to where you're going. If you're someplace like the Uintas, where the water is pretty clear, then SteriPENs are great. That's what I use. However, in the Glen Canyon area or Coyote Gulch, your water would still be pretty nasty. Even if it's sterilized...

    Water On The Trail

I'm seriously thinking of picking up a Sawyer mini. How do you like it? It's getting rave reviews, and with the price and weight, it seems a no-brainer; or at least it would, except I already have a SteriPEN.

King's Peak Loop from Henry's Fork TH

Usually by late August there aren't many mosquitoes. I was there in early-mid August last year and hardly saw one.

    Amethyst- Middle- West Basins.

It's somewhat steep and has lots of loose rock, but most of the slopes (and most of the peaks even, for that matter) throughout the Uintas are rated class 2 or 2+. Very little in the Uintas, unless you deliberately seek out more difficult routes because you enjoy them, are class 3 or more. The...

Uintas Highline Trail Solo Thru Hike - Getting to/from trailheads logistics

Vernal has a cab company. It probably does relatively well given that lots of folks in the oil and gas industry travel to Vernal for business trips lately. Whether or not it'd drive all the way out to Leidy or not, I don't know, but you could always ask.

    Boots for backpackin?

Meindl boots are expensive, but mostly full grain leather and have phenomenal reviews. You can only get them domestically (normally) from Cabela's, though, and they aren't the exact same models that get rave reviews all across the European hiking community. Although they get darn good reviews...

    Uintas Conditions 2015

I'm much more concerned now about mud, mosquitoes and bogginess in a week or two than I am about snow. It looks like the snow has melted out considerably in the last few weeks, and with the forecast we've got now, that will only escalate. I hope it's warm enough to dry it out a bit too...

Yosemite XC north from Tuolumne Meadows

Have you considered treating your clothing in permethrin? All of those mosquitos would have died on impact if you had.

First Time 5-Day Backpacking thru High Uintas

    1) Shouldn't be too busy on a weekdays, but it might get crowded on the weekends, at least around Jordan Lake. However... 2) Look for a campsite up on the bench. I saw some great ones not far from Faxon Lake, but still in the trees. There's more up near Blue Lake too, if you want to go...

Sorry about the wedding! Nice trip, though!

    Uintas Conditions 2015

And with any luck, as the trip goes on, conditions will improve too. I'll take three passes early, but the gnarliest passes like Red Knob and Dead Horse are late in the trip. I think I'll be fine too, but I'm certainly watching on the ground conditions with an eagle eye this next week or so.

    Uintas Conditions 2015

My biggest concern is the big passes I'm hoping to cross, with a rookie 13 year old and no ice axes or crampons. My second biggest concern is post-holing or crossing big snowfields. My third biggest concern is out of control water and mosquitoes. But again; I'll attempt my original plan, but...

    Naturalist or Middle Basin?

Although the creek wasn't as high when I was there last August, needless to say, I still think if you're careful you can cross the creek at the Jordan Lake fork without getting wet. You do need to have good balance to stay on the row of rocks, though--or trekking poles to help keep you from...

    Uintas Conditions 2015

Which is nice... at least for my plans... but I want to have that plan B ready to deploy if needed anyway.
