    Rio Grande

Nice! I love the Big Bend area! Way too long since I've been there. Were there any security issues that the rangers highlighted to you? When I was last there, we got a light lecture, but it clearly wasn't as much of an issue five years ago as its become since.

Cuberant, Kamas & Lofty with a little Mount Marsell

haha! So if you caught up to them in 3 hours, what had they been doing for the last day?

Cuberant, Kamas & Lofty with a little Mount Marsell

Resurrecting an old thread; over on summitpost, they claim that the trail to Cuberant is a lot easier to find on a map than on the ground, and that a lot of route-finding across a very sketchy trail might be required. Of course, they also caveat that with the fact that their experience may be...

    Lockhart area roaming, MLK Weekend

Gear question: what's that you're sleeping in? Although I still use an older fairly lightweight 2-person tent (that I bought to be essentially a disposable tent for my kids to use while going through Scouts, but I later "stole" back from them when I realized it was fairly lightweight and would...

Return to Middle Basin, Hayden Pk, & Bald Mtn

Wow, what happened? Rotator cuff tear? And you took those pictures with your phone!? Wow!

How cold was it? Also: sweet F-150!

Hikesgiving 2015 in the Red River Gorge

I think my wife would take a dim view of Hikesgiving... but I like it!

    A Very Late Beartooth Report

Ooof. Looks steep and exposed. I might rethink that plan...

    A Very Late Beartooth Report

Y'know, by odd coincidence, I was looking at routes through the Beartooths the other day, and after seeing some images of the cirque with Glissade and Bergschrund Lakes, they were high on my wish list. I had thought of doing the "beaten path" route, but taking a small detour to see this cirque...

    A Very Late Beartooth Report

Sounds like you needed a down day there early on, and the trip could have been tons better!

    Robbers Roost birthday

Lots of great pics. My favorite is probably the first one, though with the Fisher Towers and La Sals.

Daddy Daughter: To the Notch & 17 Lakes

Another quick question; we'll certainly have some non-hikers in our group, but some of those non-hikers are fishers. What's the best lake along the Mirror Lake Hwy (close to the Crystal Lake TH would be ideal, but not essential)? If I can get the fishers on board, it'll be a lot easier for me...

Daddy Daughter: To the Notch & 17 Lakes

So... old TR, but I have a question, if you'll indulge me (looks like I'll be spending a week in Park City with my in-laws for a family reunion, and I'm looking for any excuse I can come up with to avoid spending too much time sitting around staring at each other.) I've usually seen a variation...

High Uintas Wildernes - 8 Day Solo Hike August 2015

That's very good to know. It's on my potential list for next year.

    Cutthroat and Teal Lakes

It seems odd, but maybe it's not that big a deal. It's not even a mile on the road from Ruth Lake TH to Highline TH. They could probably walk it in 15 minutes or so. It just doesn't make a lot of sense that they'd be at Ruth Lake unless they'd come in from somewhere else in the western Uintas...

    Vermont's Fall Colors

It is the one scenic consolation prize we get east of the Mississippi. Sadly, it only lasts a few weeks. And the yellow aspens in the Rockies are nearly as cool anyway.

Grand Teton National Park, September, 2015

Well, I guess that's always the risk you take as it starts getting later into September. Yikes with that snow!

    Anyone use foot powder

A friend of mine, used to be Army Ranger, is starting to get into backpacking recreationally now that his kids are turning into teenagers. He swears by the stuff, says it's use is ubiquitous in the military. I'd never really considered it and don't know any backpackers that use it. Anyone...

The Gros Ventre Wilderness - August 31, 2015

One more question: what map do you use for the Gros Ventres? I'm a huge fan of the Trails Illustrated, but I don't think that their Teton area map gives a lot of detail of the Gros Ventres (or maybe I'm wrong and it does?) or do you just use the quads, or some printout of caltopo, or what?

The Gros Ventre Wilderness - August 31, 2015

I love the Gros Ventres. Most of the scenic excellenece of the nearby Winds or Tetons, without the crowds. That's a pretty epic loop y'all put together! And is that a kilt? EDIT: Looked at the flickr pictures, and yes—it clearly is a kilt! How is it to hike in that? For that matter, what...
