Planning to do Death Hollow for the 2.5 time....

I remember carrying my dad's vietnam-era alice pack into the Uintas, Wasatch, and Zion when I was a boy scout, but I also carried canned chilli to cook in the campfire, and a hatchet, and a blanket instead of a sleeping pad under my sleeping bag. Seems like you could lighten up by dropping the...

Planning to do Death Hollow for the 2.5 time....

Wow, that two-packs configuration looks miserable! And mil-surplus; all that canvas and cordura and big beefy zippers sounds more like a work-weekend than a recreation-weekend! (Oh, but I might be biased 'cause I'm still in the military.)

Cedar Mesa / Grand Gulch (Mar 6-9)

Thanks Bob. Hmmm, maybe I won't tell Amanda about the mice; I still don't want to bring a tent. Shane's maps (Climb-Utah.com) have a LOT of ruins/art marked on the maps, but still binoculars is a good idea! And of course we'll be filtering the water.

Oh, and water; probably pretty easy to find this time of year?

Cedar Mesa / Grand Gulch (Mar 6-9)

Planning a Grand Gulch trip with Amanda (GF), March 6 through 9. We're thinking the Kane Gulch to Bullet Canyon route, is 4 days enough time? Taking beta from Shane Burrows' Climb-Utah online guide, anything else not-to-miss while down there? Is anyone going to be around there at that time...

    Music while hiking poll

Pretty much always have music while hiking. I have one of those 10 dollar mobile speakers clipped to my chest strap, can use iPod or phone. Sometimes when hiking alone I switch from music to an audio book or a podcast.

Group Site near Zion or St George? (Veterans Day)

For a couple years now I've been getting together on Veterans Day weekend (Veterans Day is November 11th) with the guys I served with in Iraq. We camp together and there's some hiking and biking but mainly it's about the campfire and the food and the beer and the stories from the old days. We've...

    Backcountry beverages

Just-add-water beer is a terrible idea. I've got that same GSI flask, but have only used it a few times; mainly 'cause I'm not a big liquor drinker. I've also got a Platypus wine bag (http://www.rei.com/product/781835/platypus-platypreserve-wine-preservation-system-27-fl-oz). I've used it quite...

THE BARRACKS (East Fork of the Virgin River)

Lower section is a research area and may never be open to the public. It seems like I read somewhere that there's some native sites of archeological value in there too. I only got to see part; I'd like to get back there sometime to see more. Also the rock fall/log jam was mentioned as being...

    Backcountrypost Shirts

I had drill over the weekend; Friday morning through Sunday afternoon, and then I slept away Sunday evening. It may have been sitting in the unchecked box a few days.
