    Water On The Trail

I found that with bladders I felt more thirsty and used more water then I do when just using my Nalgene. For me, the constant sipping at the bladder just didn't equate to more hydration. I prefer to take big drinks less frequently then I can with a bladder.

    How close is too close?

If I came to a lake and had to stop for the night and the best spot was taken, then I would find a spot as far away as I could. In my mind, that is the proper thing to do.

    Boots for backpackin?

I would give a third shout for Zamberlain. They have been good to me over the years. They are a bit pricey but my shoes are one area that I will spend money on.

New Waste Disposal Requirements for Coyote Gulch Visitors

This is a much needed change and should almost be standard for the whole area. Also, I could smell that pit toilet from a mile up canyon last time I went through there. It was nasty!

    What would Abbey think???

I tried to stay in Moab as I was passing through that weekend. My wife and I literally just parked, ate lunch, and stared at all of the people. We were looking for a room so we could shower and sleep in a soft bed, the cheapest we could find was the Motel 6 at around $150. It seemed to me to...

    Insect Repellent

If I had to use DEET or something similar, I would spray it onto something I didn't care about and tie that around my belt or to my pack. I usually just make sure there are large clouds of extra stinky pot smoke around me to keep them away. The idea of spraying my family down with any chemical...

    Pocket Rocket Stove

I love that stove. One can should be good but I would probably bring an extra just to be safe. Also, make sure you make a aluminum foil wind break for around the back or you could end up using 10 cans.

Ten One-star Reviews of Utah's National Parks

Blah, reread the above post and realized I sounded like an elitist prick. But I spent so much damn time typing it I don't want to delete it. It is awesome that people are getting exposed and enjoying National Parks. I hope they stay so busy that it takes at least six months so get a camping...

Ten One-star Reviews of Utah's National Parks

The point I was trying to make with my comment about the diversity of Utah was that there is something for everyone. I love that National Parks exist, they give many people their first and only exposure to the outdoors and often provide a safe way for inexperienced folk to get their feet wet so...

Ten One-star Reviews of Utah's National Parks

Most parks are pretty bad for crowds at this point. Yellowstone, Yosemite, Redwoods, Zion all are crazy. The last time I was at Old Faithful, I was about 5 rows back in a huge group of people, almost all of them foreigners and I am sure that everyone has seen the picture of half-dome and how...

    Wind Rivers and dogs

The only time I don't take my red heeler with me is when they are not allowed like in Coyote or Grand. She loves to be outside and spends the time checking the trail ahead and then running back to make sure no one is sneaking up on us. The only time anyone has said anything was near the...

    Pacific Northwest Car Camping

I love the Oregon Coast. There is some good spots near Tillamook Head and then they can be found all down the coast. The whole coast is public as I recall and you can camp on the beach in numerous locations. My usual M.O. is to rent a beach house, I got one on Gold Beach with a hot tub on the...

Nepal Earthquake: Everest Base Camp Footage

I have a few Nepalese people that work for me. Most of them have only been over here for a few years and they usually go home every year to see their wives and children and such. They are pretty distraught right now and it looks like I might be approving a bunch of FMLA in the near future...

    Primus EasyLight Lantern

http://www.rei.com/product/784354/primus-easylight-lantern-with-piezo I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to use one of these yet? I realized that my REI discount was going to expire last night about 10:30 so, I hopped online and grabbed one spur of the moment. I like that it is so...

    Backpacking First Aid Kits

I keep it pretty simple. For me: Motrin Duct tape and moleskin Tylonol PM or something stronger - I work 12 hr night shifts and often end up sitting up all night then hiking. Super glue For the dogs: Duct Tape Gauze pads

    Public Lands

The topic just drives me crazy. You would think that at this point, we would have figured something out that didn't destroy everything. I mean, I can jump into a river in the dead of winter in my sleeping bag and probably sleep relatively warm but I have to use the same stuff to power my car...
