Avoiding Weekend Crowds - Tetons vs. Wind Rivers

Just once going over Knapsack Col. Came in from Lozier Lakes area. We shared Knapsack with 3 other groups. Saw quite a few people along the main trail corridor that comes up from Green River Lakes. But it didn't really feel over crowded until Titcomb Basin. A lot of people on here love that...

Getting water in Yellowstone thermal areas

Nice reply Jeff. Way over my head, but I believe you. I've drank water out of a large number of streams in the park, and never had problems. There is some funky tasting water, especially in Sour Creek, but if you get it out of the river or creek, and not the thermal spring itself, you will be...

Avoiding Weekend Crowds - Tetons vs. Wind Rivers

Outside of counting 103 people one day in Coyote Gulch this year, I've never seen so many people in the backcountry as I did in Titcomb Basin and the trail down to Elkhart. And that was in September during the week. You will see less people along the Teton Crest. Any of those routes will be...

Arches National Park closed to backpacking?

I'll take that bet. How many of those canyons in the Escalante have you actually been in?

Now entering the ring... (sleeping pads)

Nonsense. They are selling air pads. And nowhere on that airpad does it say anything close to what you said in your post. It is most definitely not marketed that way. Big Agnes air pads pop easily. A lot of us that actually spend time out in the wilderness backpacking will tell you that...

Now entering the ring... (sleeping pads)

So, you've used all the different types of pads out there, for multiple (20 plus) nights each, and can say for sure it's better than everything, and nothing else is close? As someone who has spent more than 300 nights backcountry in the desert over the last 6 or 7 years (backcountry, not...

Now entering the ring... (sleeping pads)

I'm a big fan of Exped air pads. Others make good pads, but I find the quality and durability of the Exped products to be top notch. I've had terrible experiences with Big Agnes Air Pads. They leak quickly, and are not durable in my opinion. I've had more than 4 go bad on me. But also...

    Glacier: The Loop to Kintla

Nice! Glad you guys had great weather. It pored on me on a trip through there the week before. Great photos and sunset shots too. Haha, Flattop kind of sucks doesn't it. And that trail from Fifty over to Francis is a slog. Really sucks in the rain when all that brush gets wet. But its...

Glacier Natl Park - Boulder Pass Trail

For the record, I just rode my bike from the Logging Lake trailhead all the way up to Bowman Lake. Took me 2 hours (after a 13 mile day and very exhausting week). I didn't even have a single car pass me going the way I was going, or I would have ditched my bike and made them give me a ride...

    Album The members of backcountrypost.com

It's not everyday you get to hike with these two characters: @Bob and @Artemus I have a lot of respect for these two. Listening to their stories, watching them in action, seeing the expressions on their faces. Despite the scenery, it was the company that made the trip memorable for me...

    Teton Crest Trail September Weather?

Grizzly Bear is good fishing, although i've never fished it. You'll have Grizzly Bear all to yourself. Its not "advertised" as a backcountry campsite by the park, so not everyone know's you can camp there. It's nice than Holly in my opinion. Holly Lake is beautiful, but is a designated...

An 8 Day off trail backpack through the Crest of Grand Teton National Park

Got to keep the next generation interested in this stuff! Too many people these days have their heads down staring at a little screen on their phone. They're missing out. :)

    Teton Crest Trail September Weather?

The weather can be perfect or terrible. There really isn't any way to know until a few days before the trip. But the day you start your trip, you should have a really good idea of what the weather will do the next few days. It is usually great weather in September and even early October...

An 8 Day off trail backpack through the Crest of Grand Teton National Park

This is an 8 day, mostly off trail backpacking route I did In Grand Teton National Park last September (2015). The route includes the area between Moran and Avalanche Canyons. Some of the highlights include Cirque Lake, Ortenburger Lake, Mink Lake, Maidenform Peak, Table Mountain, Littles...

Glacier Nat'l Park - August - "off trail" adventures

I'm almost certain we got there on the 1st. Had a spot in the campground through the backcountry permits system. Must have just missed you guys. Crazy. And yes it was super busy!

Glacier in 2 Weeks!!! (Boulder Pass Questions)

The crowds should really be starting to thin out a little. I really don't think you're going to have to much trouble with the shuttle system. You could use that to get to the Siyeh trailhead too. Those trailheads and the shuttles on the east side seem less crowded than the west side...

Glacier Nat'l Park - August - "off trail" adventures

Ha, yep my van was there. When did you guys go up Shan gri la? Hiked in to Many Glacier on August 1st I think, coming in from Poia. Sat on the Swiftcurrent front porch for several hours that evening, think it was a Sunday. Hiked up Swift Pass on August 2nd. So we must have been close.
