Camping at or near Elkhart Park?

Curious if anyone here has experience and perhaps some sound advice on camping at or around Elkhart Park in the Windies. Will be arriving on a Wednesday night, and hope to be on the trail early the next morning. So close proximity to the trailhead is a bonus, but not a huge deal. Looks like...

Lower Red Castle Lake -- 6/13/15

Thanks! I typically haul a larger DSLR (and thus a larger tripod, lens, etc...) but I carried a mirrorless m4/3 camera with me on this trip - specifically the Panasonic GX1 w/ 14mm 2.5 pancake lens. This system isn't quite on the same level as the higher end DSLR's as far as image quality goes...

Lower Red Castle Lake -- 6/13/15

Yep, that's pretty much what we did on this trip. The kit came with a super thin nylon stuff sack (should've mentioned that); perhaps a bit too thin as it was getting stuck to the gum on the bottom of the pot and I would worry about it ripping at some point if you're not careful.

Lower Red Castle Lake -- 6/13/15

Been a while since I posted here but with the curiosity about Uintas conditions I figured this would be a good time to reactivate. Mandy and I made our way up to Lower Red Castle Lake this past weekend for our first trek up the famed East Fork Smith's Fork. I was aware of several, differing...

    Mount Timpanogos conditions 2013

For those that might be curious I did end up making a run up Timp yesterday, via Aspen Grove. We encountered sporadic, easy patches of snow in Primrose Cirque and a long, traversing stretch above Timpanogos Basin--all of which was easily defeated due to the snow's extremely soft and sticky...

    Mount Timpanogos conditions 2013

This guy did it this past weekend from Timpooneke: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.650859958262383.1073741858.619150204766692&type=1 Looks like Timp basin is still mostly covered but the ridge is perfectly clear. Gonna take a crack at it myself this Sunday; I'll let you know if much...

    North Fork Road/Chamberlains conditions

This past weekend I went as far as the spur road on the ridge just north of the head of Orderville (37 21.543,-112 50.482). Can't speak for what is beyond, but up to that point it was very much 2WD and low-clearance friendly.

    Zion Traverse: April 26-28, 2013

If time was no issue, I'd recommend 4 days. Although some of the other camps that we strolled by didn't look all that inviting. I think the only camp that could break up that long second day would be the Sawmill Springs camp (#9), or maybe a little detour up to Lava Point.

    Zion Traverse: April 26-28, 2013

Thanks, Yvonne. You do indeed gain a few hundred more miles traveling from east to west, but IMO there are a couple of advantages. One, you get the *big* climb over with on day 1, when you're still feeling fresh. From the West Rim, it's a very casual waltz all the way to Lee Pass. The only other...

    Zion Traverse: April 26-28, 2013

When the opportunity arose a few weeks back to join a small group taking on the Zion Traverse, I had to jump on it. Having become familiar with a few of Zions technical canyoneering routes, I felt like I knew the Park relatively well, but not nearly well enough. This would be an incredible...

    Waterloo-Pinckney Trail - Part 1

Not sure how I missed this one either. Glad I found it though, as it definitely brings back some fond memories. This was my favorite destination (outside of Warren Dunes) in southern Michigan. Was never brave enough to overnight it when it was that chilly though :cold: Great stuff, and thanks...

    assembling a bucket list

As I've only been fortunate enough to reside here for 2.5 years, I'm certainly no expert on the subject. But here are my bucket list recommendations based on my experiences thus far: Hiking: -Deep Lake (Winds) -Buckskin Gulch (Paria) -Alaska Basin/Hurricane Pass (Tetons) -Chicago Basin (San...

    Smith Cabin Reef Hike

Great stuff, Desertrat. My wife and I did the loop last spring, and what a sweet little route that is. Don't feel too bad about missing Horsethief--besides the initial downclimb into the canyon and subsequent arch, it's kinda ho-hum. The best stuff is definitely on top of the Reef.

    Jasper Canyon in The Maze

They certainly need better signage if they want the closure to be more effective. But then again, more signage is a serious drain on the wilderness experience.

    Jasper Canyon in The Maze

My two cents: if Jasper Canyon is closed for reasons of biodiversity and ecological integrity (i.e. hasn't been grazed) then we should respect that and stay out of it. Just cuz a few folks may or may not be poaching it doesn't mean that we should feel licensed or entitled to do the same. Am I...
