    Rain Gear

I have had no issues with my Marmot Precip. The jacket is less expensive than many of the alternatives. After a few years of use with any rain jacket, you need to refresh the outside repellant coating.

    Storing food above treeline

If possible, I never camp above treeline. Strong Thunderstorms can take out most any three season tent and lightening will fry you to a crisp. I have never camped above treeline in Utah, there simply is no need to. Even in the Sierra Nevada, Wind River Range and CO Rockies you can almost always...

Weight of food for a trip?

Any trip over 3 days I create a spreadsheet and target a daily calorie intake. The longer the backpacking trip, the higher the daily calorie intake. Nine day trips I target 2800 a day. I find that amount does not make my pack too heavy, keeps me feeling full all day, and when I come home I am...

    Outdoor Retailer Leaving Utah

Good to hear. It is about time they leave this state. Utah is not friendly to people of a tree hugger persuasion.

3 sisters loop or timberline loop

I have done the Three Sisters loop before. If you push hard it can be done in 3 days, 4 is recommended. Make sure you get a permit for the obsidian limited entry area if you plan on camping in the area. Part of the trail goes through it. We all know how hard it is to plan exactly where you will...

Any water on Moroni Slopes/Horse Heaven?

I am planning a backpacking trip to the Moroni Slopes and am wondering if anyone knows whether or not there is any water in Last Chance Well, Moroni Slope Catchment or Horse Heaven Reservoir. Below is a map of the area where I am hoping to find a water source.

Happy Canyon/Sams Mesa Box Canyon - 4 day loop from Burr Point

We drove down from SLC the day before our 4 day trip (Oct 24-27, 2015) was to start and camped at Burr Point. We did the loop counter-clockwise. That allowed us to leave a rope on Miner's Rappel and pick it up on the last day. The Miner's Rappel is somewhat awkward and I was glad we brought an...

    white pine lake.

I have seen people camp and build fires near White Pine lake. There are only a few places to put a tent by the lake. Hardly anyone camps up there.

    Embedding Maps

You can longer use gmap4 to embed maps with routes in them. This link should show as having a route on it: http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=43.086239,-109.363048&z=10&t=t1&q=mymap,217780698511081208546.0004e48e591342648a249 If you just insert the link raw in a backcountrypost.com...

A remote week-long trip, Late-may/Early June, Utah or the Southwest

I do not think you will have any issues with water. Both Lean To and Youngs canyon have multiple springs in them. However, this has been a really dry year, and I do not think anyone knows forsure which springs will continue to run and which are going to dry up. Personally, I would feel...

    Boots or shoes?

It doesn't rain much in Yosemite and the tails are normally in good condition. Buy a pair of beefy mid or low day hikers and you will be fine, assuming you don't plan on climbing a lot of mountains with scree fields. I did a week long backpacking trip in the Sierras last summer in Vasque Mantra...

    pack size

I used to wear hiking boots all the time, then I switched to light weight day hikers. If you haven't already done so, loose the heavy shoes and go low weight. Even in rocky uneven terrain a light weight shoe can allow you to better place your foot and thereby avoid twisting an ankle.

    Sea to Summit X Pot

I would guess the silicone that makes up the sides of the Xpot would help insulate it from wind and cold, similar to what a pot cozy would do. I know when the temp is low or the wind high my titanium pot takes a much longer time to boil water.

    pack size

What I have noticed is that small packs normally mean: 1) Less calories/fuel/first aid kit/other consumables per day 2) Smaller/lighter/absence of shelter 3) Less insulating/rain layers All the above can cause issues when the weather turns or you need to extend your trip a little due to...

Hanksville Shuttle Needed: April 18 from Burr Point to West Rock Canyon

    pack size

I have no idea how you can do a 4 day or longer trip with a 65L pack. All my gear is ultralight but it still will not fit into a 65L pack. I have had way too many trips where the weather forecast has been completely wrong and a warm weather trip has turned very ugly. I also insist on taking a...

OP, what kind of sleeping pad do you have? If you sleep on your side like I do, the type of pad matters a lot. My Neo Air is a dream compared to the old close cell foam pad I used to use.

    Outdoor Clothing Fit

JCPenny and other mainstream retailer cloths are all too baggy for me. REI and the like are the only places where the cloths fit. The average person in the US is large, and average clothing in mainstream stores reflect that. Unlike the OP, I almost never see heavy people in the wilderness...

Anchoring tents in sand and snow

I would generally recommend against using a tent when you are planning on camping in Snow (mountains) or Sand (desert). Most three season tents will have trouble standing up to +50 mph winds (been there/done that). Generally, when I am in the desert I use a Gor-tex bivy sack. Normally it only...
