Advice on the best light backpacking tent

Ignoring my own questions from my prior post...I would strongly suggest at least researching TarpTent. They have a wide variety of styles/options and the price is excellent (IMO). I have a TarpTent Rainbow and I really like it.

Advice on the best light backpacking tent

Solo tent or able to fit 2? 3? Does it need to be freestanding or would you want one that can be set up with trekking poles? Is price a factor? What conditions will it be used in? Do you need a double wall or would a single wall work? Are you gentle or hard on your gear? More info on your...

    GoLite GoesBankrupt

I'm sure it's different with the retail stores, but there have been numerous times when I have strongly considered buying a GoLite product, only to find out it was out of stock through their website. That just isn't a good way to make sales.

    East coast backpacking

Where in the mid-Atlantic are you located? How far are you interested in driving? Tons of good stuff in Virginia and W. Virginia that I've done personally or have on my "to hike" list.

    Hiking Books (entertaining not informational)

I've read AWOL, A Walk in the Woods, and Wild. I'm a little burned out I think on the thru-hike trip report books. Bryson's was by far my favorite of those three. I Hike, by Lawton Grinter is a good one...collection of short stories. Right now I'm about 2/3 of the way through Desert...

    Photography Help

It's funny...I prefer the first pic to the second by quite a wide margin. Maybe that's why I'm a terrible photographer

National Monuments - To be or not to be?

Teddy Roosevelt did the same thing with a large number of places. I don't have a list at hand, but a number of our current national parks started as national monuments designated as such simply by Roosevelt or another president.

    Sierra weather - mid-September

Wife & I are planning a later summer vacation. While it won't be totally backcountry driven, I am hoping to convince her that a night or two under the stars isn't a bad thing. We're looking at a few days in San Fran followed by a trip either into Yosemite or to Lake Tahoe (and Desolation...

    Gear Review Best Hiking Briefs

I have a pair of under armor boxer briefs that I prefer over the ex officio ones I have. They are a little more snug, and ride up less. One (potential) drawback is that they don't have a fly. I don't mind personally, but YMMV. I've also used the C9 brand (Champion) that is sold at Target...

Not Really Backpacking: Car Camping Trip in virginia.

How short does the hike have to be? The PATC has a cabin off of the Little Stony Creek in northern part of GWNF. I believe you can fish the creek and it's about 3.5 miles from parking to the cabin. If you're more into hiking, you can hit Big Schloss from the same parking spot (or a longer hike...

UL Backpacking: A Thread for the Gram Counters

Nice one Nick. I carry a small plastic pint of bourbon to save weight over beer. Plus it still works if it's warm!

UL Backpacking: A Thread for the Gram Counters

Most of my move towards UL (I'm not there just yet) has been done by cutting things out, not through purchases. Simply weighing my stuff was a huge eye opener, and helps me choose between options. And then I rarely take extras of things. No change of underwear, only one extra pair of socks, no...

    Who's going out this weekend?

It's only Tuesday but already my thoughts at work are drifting towards the weekend. I'll be getting out for a short overnight for only the 2nd time in 2014, and I'm simply stoked. I'm headed to Cold Mountain, on a stretch of the App. Trail in Virginia. Just a short night out, but I've really...

    Big Agnes vs...a Tarptent?

If the dimensions of the notch are scaring you off, take a look at the TT Rainbow. It's a single wall, so be advised of that, but the floor area and headroom are fairly amazing for a shelter that is just a tick north of 2lbs. I'm 6'2 and I can sit up and change clothes inside without any...
