I saw this video and thought it was cool. I'm going to have to give it a try on my next trip. I doubt it'll work for a DSLR, but for a small pocket camera, it could be a great option.
For a heavier version, you could use a monopod and lash your trekking poles on as the other two legs. Granted, all this assumes you use trekking poles. I imagine this might even be strong enough for some DSLRs with small lenses.
