1. Capitol Reef NP
Is the only way to receive backpacking permits in the Visitor Center?
Are there no info boards or kiosks near the THs, to grab a kopie?
Lower Spring Cyn, Fremont river TH, a good choice for a 2 day backpacking trip? (Out and back, we don't have a shuttle.)

2. Escalante area
Hiked somebody of BCP the shortcut into Middle Death Hollow or S. Allen's Moonshaddow Cyn?

3. Reserved

Thanks in advance :)

You can also get them from the Anasazi State Park Museum in Boulder. Unfortunately those are the only two options. Very frustrating.

What is this shortcut to Middle Death Hollow you speak of? Are you thinking the shortcut route via Micro Death to access Lower Death Hollow? I didn't know there were any routes between the BMT in/out and the Escalante confluence.

I think Kelsey's book shows a route going over from Pine Creek? Never heard of anyone using it though. "Moonshadow Canyon" intrigues me. Best link online I've seen is here...day 9, with a map and link to the description. Lots of big potholes and a "secret" forest...

I've read that TR before, but today, that really makes me want to go back to Death Hollow and finally do the top down.

Thanks Nick, :)
Unfortunately we'll come from Hanksville and the TH's into CRNP are located on Nottom Rd - very frustrating. That waste my time..

The TH to the shortcut into MDH is Pine Creek below the Lower Box TH.
Micro Death Hollow is beautiful. BTDT last year. :)

Thanks BJ, :)
I know about the route of Kelsey's guide book. Two days ago I found this link too.
Moonshadow is very scenic. The potholes are very similar to Mamie Creek.
I've some beta from a German hiker, but he wasn't down into the DH.

I have been down another way, no rope needed. You come up the PIne creek rd from Escalante. There is a spur road just before the usual parking area for the TH off of Hellsbackbone rd. It's on the ridge between Pine and DH cyn. You go out it till deadends. You can scramble down, gets steep, not bad. You end up in the big open flat in the pines.
I will look and see if I have a coorid...

I thought I read somewhere that you can also get them at the Bullfrog marina if you happen to be coming from that direction. Honestly, it's a little bit of a hassle to get them at Anasazi - they generally just end up calling the park on your behalf and you just speak by phone to the backcountry office. But better than driving 18 miles out of your way to get them at Fruita.

I've always showed up in person in Boulder at the Anasazi museum to get my permit. Many parks are adding online rezzy's/permits - GCNP just told me they hope to add that this year. No idea when CRNP will add theirs.

On lack of shuttle... maybe you could get some nice person from Park City to walk with you and help with the shuttle if you planned it and provided good cheer.

LarryBoy - interesting.. I've been there two or three times in the last five years and they have never called anyone. They looked me up and down and wrote me the permit.
