Driving from Phoenix to Flagstaff May 2 on our way to the Grand Canyon. Planning to take the scenic drive through Oak Creek Canyon on hwy 179 & 89A. Looking for suggestions to see and take a day hike. If there are other places better then the OCC drive let us know.

I was through there a few months ago. Oak Creek Canyon is nice, but I thought overrated. West Fork is the main draw, but there are lots of southern Utah hikes that are way better ie more scenic, less crowded, and less than $10/vehicle for parking.

That said, driving down the canyon, the traffic gets backed up horrendously because it all dumps out in downtown Sedona. You do not want to exit the canyon by driving south in the afternoon!

So, I might be a little biased against it, but others like it, so it all depends on your preference.

Other places I would recommend:
1. Wupatki National Monument
2. Palatki/Honanki Ruins
3. V-bar-V petroglyphs / Sacred Mountain
